Welcome to rootschat Franky01!

I think you're going to have to give us some more information.

Yorkshire is a big place, and on the IGI there are numerous John Hunters born 1793 +/- 5 years. One stood out. The details are:
John Edward Hunter born about 1795
Comte D'York
Commondale
Yorkshire

However this information is submitted by a member of the LDS church and there is no source information, so it's accuracy is doubtful.

It may help if you can let us know:
How do you know John was born in Yorkshire?
Do you know his wife's name?
Were they married in England?
Were any of their children born in England?
Did John leave England, and if so, do you know when and where he went?
Did he appear in any English censuses?

Any other details such as names, dates, places will help to try to locate him.

If you wish to check that IGI entry, it looks like Commondale is in the North Riding of Yorkshire. This might help:

No idea what Comte D'York is though ....

Hi, Ruskie!

Thankyou for your quick reply.

I got the information about the birth place from two sources:
1) Familysearch.org
2) From a private génégenealogy tree via Geneanet.com

From one of the descendent's of the Hunter family here in French Polynesia I got I kind of biography from John Edward HUNTER. Here is a short extract of it:

NOTE:Source: Judith Williams
John Edward Hunter

John Edward (or Edward John) Hunter was born about 1793 in Yorkshire, UK. A mariner, his thirst for adventure drew him to the new colony of Port Jackson, where he met and married nineteen-year old Susannah Flanagan Chapman in 1817. Susannah was the elder of two daughters born to Ann Marsh and her legal husband, Robert Flanagan.

Eleven of their twelve children survived their childhood years, despite voyages between Tahiti and Port Jackson, a perilous undertaking in small ships. Quite some of them married French spouses, giving an interesting new branch in their already most interesting family trees, and Thomas junior married a Tahitian woman, this branch being of even greater interest.

A search of the Archives of State (NSW) Records shows John Hunter to have been on the following vessels, either as a first class seaman, first mate, and later, master. Two microfiches, (5288 and 5289, and also micro-reels 561 and 562), showed his seagoing voyages to be on small brigs, varying from 57 tons to 108 tons with the largest one 142 tons, not very big vessels to be voyaging out on to the not always peaceful Pacific, and the sometimes turbulent Tasmania Sea en route to New Zealand

I hope those information may help you for your research.

Please would you like to reply to my E-Mail:   mikari@mail.pf

It will make the exchange of information much easier, as I could join documents.

Hoping to hear from you

Sincerely

Franky

Hi Franky,

So it gets even more complicated ... John Edward OR Edward John Hunter.  ;)

Do you know where or when John Edward died?

Do you have the marriage certificate of John and Susannah?

Sorry about bombarding you with questions, but it might help narrow him down.

Hi Ruskie,

Sorry, that's all I have on information's about John, Edward HUNTER (I'm almost sure that this is the right spelling)

About his death, it seems that he was lost somewhere on sea during a voyage to China about 1844.

I hope this might help a little.

Why you don't write to my E-Mail, that would be that much easier.

Hope to hear from you

Franky

I think it's better to keep the discussion here rather than me contacting you via email.

I have very little knowledge especially when it comes to mariners, but there are some very knowlegable people who may have more to contribute, so best to continue the discussion where more people will see it.

I thought if you had his death certificate you may discover more information, especially if it was an Australian one.

Also the marriage certificate may give you further information, if you can hunt that down.

He sounds very illusive.

Thank you Ruskie,

I'll try to get somehow a contact in Australia via the Flanagan/Chapman family if I can find them, and try to find out if they have a death certificate which is not sure. This may take of course some time. As soon I get something from this side, I'll let you know.

Have a nice Day

Franky

Hi,

The marriage cert. is available from Australia for John and Susannah Chapman 1817.

Search this site for free;

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/

There appear to be 2 marriage ref. no's, which is unusual. not sure what info was on certs at this time.
It would be advisable to purchase this to get hopefully correct info. on parents etc.

There are also births for this couple, at least 6.

Trish
