1861 Census - William Barclay - Complete
« on: Tuesday 28 October 08 14:11 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with this person, my wifes ggreat grandfather.
He was born in Peterhead Nov 1849 and I have found him with his mother, Margaret, in the 1851 Census but his father died in 1850. I have found him in the 1871 Census in Hebburn DUR but would love to plug the gap. His mother Margaret married Peter Allan in Feb 1854 and according to the birth of their children they continued to live in Peterhead until 1861.
His full name was William Lily Ledrum Barclay. Any help would be welcome.

Have you found Margaret & Peter Allan in the 1861 census? Do you think that Margaret was a daughter in law of George Barclay? He did have a daughter Margaret & she was baptised in 1824.She is living with her parents & siblings in 1841 census in Charlotte Street. There was a William born circa 1828.Could this have been your Margaret's husband? I got the 1841 & 1851 census details from freecen. What was Margaret's maiden name by the way?

William Lily Barclay and Margaret Wallace were married in 1849 and their only child William Lily Ledrum Barclay was born in 1849. William Lily Barclay died in Jan 1851 and in the 1851 Census Margaret Barclay was described as a widow. She remarried in 1854, Peter Allen was the groom and they went on to have 10 children.
Margaret was born in 1828 the daughter of William Wallace and Helen Chisholm.
If you'd like any further information then let me knoew
regards

I think I have found other descendants of Wiiliam Lily Lendrum Barclay's gtgrandparents, Thomas Lendrum and Jean Cassie.  Margaret Lendrum could be the sister of Mary who married George Barclay.

Margaret Lendrum and Andrew Arthur (a tailor) lived in Peterhead.   They named an older son Andrew (he was a druggist in Peterhead) and a son born in 1811 was called Thomas.  A witness at Thomas Arthur's baptism was George Barclay. They also had two surviving daughters - Gordon and Margaret.  Another daughter, Jane, died in infancy.

Andrew Arthur (senior) was a witness a the baptism of George Barclay and Mary Lendrum's daughter Elizabeth in 1819.  The other witness is William Lilly.
