STONEHOUSE STUART born c1757
« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 01:07 GMT (UK) »
This ancestor is posing all kinds of problems; he is my brick wall.  Down as born in Sunderland, Northumberland but what is his parentage I do not know.

His grandson, Silvester Stonehouse Stuart, during the 1861 Census was staying at Grandsable House.  Grangemouth, Scotland. County Sterling. Parish Polmont.  Could this have possibly been a family house?  Could Silvester and his family (10 members altogether) have been visiting relatives that might reveal the parentage of STONEHOUSE STUART senior?

Can this have any bearing on the origins of STONEHOUSE STUART senior?

Does anyone know of Grandsable House?  Can anyone help in any way to find out if there is any connection to STONEHOUSE STUART. I would love to get beyond him but cannot and would love some help on this.

many many thanks to anyone willing to engage.

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat!  :D

I'm afraid I don't know anything about your Stuart Family but did you know the main Cemetery between Grangemouth and Polmont is called Grandsable Cemetery?

As you enter the cemetery, there is a largish house just inside the gates. How old this building is, I don't know, but even if it doesn't date back far enough to the 'the' Grandsable House', it may well be a newer building on the same site? The Cemetery was established roughly towards the end of the 1880's so might have been part of Grandsable House's land?

On the 1881 Census, there is only one match:

Dwelling:   Grandsable
Census Place: Polmont, Stirlingshire

Head: John McKinlay, Occupation: Book-keeper *Colly??, age 69, born at Douglas, Lanarkshire
Wife: Mary Murray McKinlay, age 68, born Muirkirk, Aryshire
Son: Duncan Mc K. McKinlay, Occupation: Artist (Figure Painter), age 24, born Muirkirk, Ayrshire. (Unmarried)
Servant: Catherine SWAN, Occupation: General Servant, age 14, born Falkirk, Stirlingshire.

*Colly might be an abbreviation for Colliery?

You could try contacting Falkirk Archives: http://www.falkirk.gov.uk/services/community/cultural_services/museums/archives/archive.aspx

Good Luck,

Anne

I would imagine this is also another grandson of Stonehouse Stuart - family of Thomas Stuart :

Thank you for all the comments.  The marriage details are particularly new for me and confirm Sunderland Co. Durham as opposed to Sunderland Northumberland which had come up as an alternative and made life more confusing.  Grace Beeston was Elizabeth's sister so it's great to see her and her husband as witnesses.

The 1861 Census finds Silvester Stonehouse Stuart and his family in residence but I now know that he was there to take up a working post and not to visit relations.

However, anything else on Stonehouse Stuart senior born c1757 would be greatly appreciated.

I will try to find out if i can view this film at my local family history centre.

many thanks again for bringing to light a few important details.

Why don't you put up a new post on the Durham Board here on RootsChat www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,12.0.html - maybe someone with knowledge of the area and county may have access to other sources or be able to point you in a new direction  :)

Always worthwhile putting a link to this post so that people don't repeat what you already have.

As mentioned in a previous post, this is the house within Grandsable Cemetery grounds. I don't think t's actually got anything to do with the cemetery and will be privately owned.

It doesn't have a 'name' that I could see.
