Merthyr Tydfil place name in 1862. Completed.
« on: Thursday 30 October 08 22:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have today received a Marriage Certificate.  The Bride and Grooms address is given as :

"Cae bryan Y Merthyr "

It is written clearly.  There is not much of a gap between Cae and Bryan, so might be one word.

The Marriage took place at Merthyr Tydfil Register Office in 1862.

I have searched and cannot find a place of that name in Merthyr Tydfil.
Does anyone have any ideas of where/what it was please?

Thank you,
Reyz.

Could it be 'Cae Bryn'?

Apparently it means "Highfield" and was used for some Welsh houses.

Hi Tricia

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I was aware of the Alan George Site but thanks as I might not have been.   :)

The other site was very interesting.

I was rather  hoping that 'Cae Bryan' was somewhere near Quarry Row, Bethesda Street Upper Merthyr Tydfil, but then people moved around a lot in those days for work.

Many thanks for your time.
regards
Reyz

"Cae Bryan" appears in the 1861 Census for Upper Merthyr as "Bryant Field"; the 't' got lost somewhere. Rather than deriving from Bryn it appears to come from Bryan(t). There is also a Bryant Street. The name occurs on sheet 27 and possibly nearby sheets - see the descriptions.
I should think you have every hope of finding your people; sorry I can't do more for now.
