NEWBIE Pre-1855 birth Look-up please - FRASER in Fife or Perthshire
« on: Saturday 01 November 08 11:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello, is there a kind person out there who can assist a complete novice?  I am not able to locate a birth record on ScotlandsPeople site for my G.G.Grandfa JAMES FRASER.  The best source I have for his Scottish birthplace is 1861 England Census - birth location: Fifeshire (the writing is hard to decipher!)  He was born abt 1821.  His father was also called James Fraser, occupation: Blacksmith (source: marriage cert 1856 parish Melford, Suffolk).  Have no idea when James Jnr left Scotland to live in England.  Can someone please do a look-up ... thank you so much.

Liz

Hi Liz

WELCOME to ROOTSCHAT

Have you got the reference for the 1861 Census to have a look at?

Have you got a list of all his children:  names and birth order?

Cheers
AMBLY

Hi Ambly

Thanks for replying.

The census ref is:
1861 England - town of Gainsborough, County Lincolnshire - No. 61 Cross Street 'Police Station'  Census ref. R.G. 9/2408

There are a few errors by transcriber... his age is 10 years out, he should be listed as born in 1821 and 40 yrs.  I have his actual Death Certificate of Oct. 1880 and he's listed as 59 years.  Name of husband & wife incorrectly listed as 'FEASER' .  Also the oldest son's name is James Beswick Fraser not James Edward.

These are the children of James Fraser and Hannah:
James Beswick 1856
Margaret Jane  1860  likely to have died as an infant
Elizabeth          1864
Amie                1865
John William     1867
Clara Jane        1869
Alexander         1871 (my Great-Gfa)

Hoping you can help & thanks again.
cheers,Liz
