Beginner looking for help! Completed, thank you
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 06:59 GMT (UK) »
I am trying (from New Zealand) to find out what happened to my paternal grandparents, Jonas Barraclough b.May 1868 and Fanny Sowden b. Sep 1869.  Last sure record of them I have is 1901 census, when they were living in Spence Lane, Wortley, Leeds.

I have heard that Jonas died and Fanny re-married, but not sure when.
FreeBMD shows a Jonas Barraclough died Dec 1916 at Oldham, aged 48, which sounds promising.

So if Fanny re-married, would the register show her as Fanny Sowden or Fanny Barraclough? I have searched for both and found
Marriages Jun 1924 Barraclough    Fanny    Usher    Manchester    8d   351
Marriages Sep 1924 Sowden    Fanny    Judge    Dewsbury    9b   1595
Marriages Sep 1924 Sowden    Fanny    Vincent    Liskeard    5c   127

Next I checked deaths of Fanny Usher, Judge and Vincent but none seemed to match her age.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

Hi

Fanny Barraclough nee Sowden married Herbert Usher at Manchester Cathedral in 1924.  The marriage is indexed on LancashireBMD (link below) under both her maiden and married name

Wow, thanks for the prompt reply Andy.
Yes, that certainly looks correct.

Now how do I find what happened to her after that?
A search for deaths of Fanny Usher does not show any that fit.

Hi

What source have you used to search for her death?

Hi

FreeBMD is a work in progress and only goes up to the 1920's. You need to search the full GRO indexes quarter by quarter. These are, I think, only available online on pay sites but some libraries do have them on fiche. Do any relatives actually remember her? This may help to narrow down the search period.

I've now also tried FamilySearch and Lancashire BMD.

I have a  cousin in UK who was born 1916 and he met her as a child, but has no other memory. I guess trolling through the microfiches is only option.

Thanks for help.

Hi.  I am only offering this as a possibility.  Ancestry's free Index of Deaths records the death of a Fanny/Frances M. Usher during the Jul/Sep quarter of 1926.  Also a Herbert Usher, Jul/Sep quarter of 1939.
Unfortunately as I don't have a subscription  I'm unable to tell you where the deaths occurred.

Hi
Ancestry uses a copy of the FreeBMD index.  Both are free to search and if you click on the link it should give you the full registration reference.  It is odd that I cannot see either of the entries you mention so perhaps I am looking at a different index?
