P F J Storey - 14839970 COMPLETE
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 10:32 GMT (UK) »
Sadly my granddad (Percy Frederik John Storey) died in the early 90's and never talked about the war. i am now in possesion of his Soldiers Release Book and his Service and Pay Book. His Army number was: 14839970. Would love to find out more about what he did in the war and also how i can apply for his medals as i understand from my Nan he never applied for them.
He was also sent to the mines at one stage and managed to get out of it on 'medical grounds', although we believe his dad got a solicitor to get him out of it. any info much appreciated.

Hi

His number falls within the block for the General Service Corps, and if he went down the mines then he must have been chosen by ballot to be a Bevan Boy.

Can you post the details from his soldier book? You could also apply for his service records:

And details of how to apply for his medals

Thanks.
His release book is stamped 'Royal Engineers' and it looks like he was relesed in Brighton on 29 DEC 1947. Trade is listed as Clerk.
his service book says he was enlisted at Bury St edmunds on 14 sep 1944.

During WW2 a service man kept the first Service number that they were issued with, in this case the GSC one, even if he transferred to another unit
