Martin Family St Hilary, Glamorgan abt 1849
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 15:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi, is there anyone out there who could help me with ANY information on a Martin family, living in St Hilary, Glamorganshire around 1849?  I have been unable to locate any information before Mary Martin's marriage to John James from Merthyr Tydfil around 1871. On that Census, they are living at St Mary, Glamorganshire.   I canot locate her on either 1861 or 1851 Census.  Would love to know if there is anything more about her or her family's life.  Many thanks.

Which census are you referring to - 1871 or 1881?

Can you post FULL details of the census you have them on please - including where they were both born and when

Where did you get her maiden name from as there is no marriage on freebmd between 1867 - 1880 for a John James to a Mary Martin

1871 3 Moira St, Cardiff RG10/5362 folio 63 pgs 41-2
John James head mar 24 Blacksmith b. Merthry Tydfil
Mary wife 23 b. St Hilary
before their move to West Ham

I can't spot a Mary Martin b. St Hilary, but there is a Mary Preece and this possible marriage
John James dec qtr 1870 vol 11a pg 366 with Mary Preece  the only other name on the page

1851 Primrose Hill, Llanblethian HO107/2461 folio 483 pg 23
Llewellyn Preece head mar 41 ag lab b. Glam, Langan
Elizabeth wife 39 b. St Mary
Elizabeth dau 10 b. St Hilary
Mary dau 5 b. St Hilary
John son 2 b. Llanblethian

The only other Mary of similar age giving St Hilary as her pob on the census is Mary Fowler, wife of Samuel and her maiden name looks to be Williams - marriage registered Bridgend 1869.

Birth certificate of one of the children or the marriage cert would confirm or not.

Thank you to Carole W and Osprey for their help.  I am fairly new to ancestry and now am wondering how/why I came up with Mary Martin!  In fact, it must be Mary Preece, because I know their first son was born in 1872 in Spotland, Glamorganshire and he was called John Preece James!  I have now ordered the marriage certificate.  Many thanks again to both of you.

Glad that worked out ok. I haven't found Llewellyn's marriage to Mary's mother as yet, but he remarried
dec qtr 1860 Bridgend vol 11a pg 628 with Mary Evans on the same page, so that will get you info on his father. Although he's an ag lab on the 1851 census, he's a boot/shoemaker on others.

Thank you so much for the additional information.  I still haven't worked out how to tell if someone remarried or not when I am searching them!  I don't suppose you could possibly throw some light on one of the James's daughters?  Alice James, was born to Mary and John James abt 1873 (about a year after John Preece), again in Spotland, Glamorgan.  I know of her existence, but only because of her on, I think the 1881 or 1891 England Census in West Ham.  It is a long standing puzzle with the living family, because my gt aunt who died recently at 99 remembered Alice coming to their house in West Ham to tell them she was going to America with a man surnamed Foster.  This would have been abt 1912, my aunt reckoned.  Alice was supposed to be a nurse and Foster a patient of hers.  The only other living descendant we have contact with is in his 80's now but didn't even know of Alice's existence.  As I say, if it weren't for her appearance on that one census, I wouldn't have believed she existed either!  Many , many thanks, if you can help with this.  I have thought that maybe she didn't ever actually go to the States with this man in the end.  There was quite a scene I gather between Mary Preece and the daughters.

Alice is with her parents on the 1881 census and this looks to be her birth registration
Alice James march qtr 1873 Cardiff vol 11a pg 284.

But she's not leaping out of a later census. There's more than one marriage of an Alice James registered in West Ham. Sorry not be of more help on that.

As for Llewellyn's remarriage, his wife has a different first name and place of birth in different census years, so then you can check on
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
for a likely marriage.

The area of Cardiff is Splott, and there is a pub called Splotlands
