Looking for a grave if possible !
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 16:57 GMT (UK) »

Apparently this sailor was washed up on the shore in Jersey some time after 04/07/1915 ! ... ( he was on the ship  S.S. "Anglo Californian" (London) which carried on to Ireland  ) and I know that a body washed up on the shore is a pretty common occurrence in those parts .... but I wondered if anybody could steer me in the right direction of where to look for a grave ??

Quote
The Anglo-Californian ( unarmed ) was homeward bound to Avonmouth with a cargo of 927 horses. She was chased and shelled by a submarine. She sent wireless calls and was answered by a man-of-war beyond the horizon. The firing grew so hot that when the submarine signaled "abandon ship" the Captain decided to obey. He stopped the engines and two boats were lowered one was fired on and both capsized

He was in the Mercantile Marines born in USA but nationality was British he's remembered on Tower Hill Memorial and CWGC

I'd appreciate any help !

Annie  :)

Hi all: Richard Martin was the name of the seamen in question. I searched  the grave locator for the national cemeteries in the U.S. but he was not found there.

The links below goes to New York Times articles about the incident, with more information about Richard Martin. No burial info though

Do you think the Americans would have sent him home ?? I know they tried to in WW2 but I'm not sure in WW1 !!

Thanks for your help though ... that's great !!

Here's another New York Times article, about the inquest.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/04ny/

Annie: Not sure if he would have been sent home, but the Anglo-California sailed back to the States because I saw another Times article about a separate incident in New York in December 1915.
