McKinlay/McGenlie family
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 20:34 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying to trace the McGenlie family but it is very difficult as they kept changing the spelling of the surname.  In 1841 census they are McGenlie staying at the Swyre at Dunscore as follows:
James McGenlie 50 yrs Agricultural Lab. born Dunscore
Robert McGenlie 40 yrs  ditto
Jane McGenlie 30 yrs      ditto
Philip McGenlie 25 yrs                     ditto
Isabella Laurie 13 yrs. born Dunscore

The Robert and Jane are siblings of Thomas McGenley who married Mary McMurdo (my line).   The Isabella is the daughter of Jane.  I have the birth of Isabella (1827 Dunscore) and also the marriage of Jane to Joseph Laurie in 1827 at Moffat.   There are no other births to be found of McKinlay/McGinleys in Dunscore.   Robert, another brother called Daniel and Jane all ended up in the Southern Counties Asylum at various times and Jane died there in 1877.  Daniel died in 1882 at Swyre Cottage and Robert in 1867 at same place (both with the surname McKinlay).

In 1851 Jane and brother Robert are living together at Swyre Beck in Dunscore.  Jane is a widow, Daniel is in the Asylum and there is no trace of James who I presume died before this.  I am trying to find the marriage of Isabella who is shown as married on the Dunscore poor records for her mother Jane but does not give her married name.  I cannot find her death without this.  I followed a Isabella Laurie who married Thomas Kirkpatrick in Keir but she is not the correct one.

Can anyone suggest how I can find out who she married?   I have tried OPR's and Scotlandpeople from 1855 but not luck.

Thomas died in 1856 at Penpont and his parents were James McGinnley and Jeanne McMillan.   Another brother William stayed at Craigturrah in Tynron and married twice.  I have his death in 1875.

Any ideas how to find Isabella or Philip - I don't know who he was.

As you can see the name changed frequently which doesn't help!!

Thanks Morag

Hi Morag.

Welcome to the obsession that is fondly known as family research.  You may soon recognize my symptoms.

My brick wall is James Murray, blacksmith circa 1815 - 1843.

James and his wife Elizabeth had at least four children.  The youngest (depending on whose misinformation is given on the internet) Sarah was born and baptized at Kelton in 1840.  James died in 1843 and unfortunately I cannot confirm for definite where his widow is in 1851.  I think I have found her in Springholm, Urr living with her daughter Margaret and a 6 year old boy called David.  I think I may also have found her two sons Samuel and William, but not Sarah.  I can find no marriage or death for this child and it seems as if she has disappeared from all records.  However, interestingly in Springholm there is a Sarah born Kelton 1840 and I did wonder if that was perhaps her somehow mis-transcribed by the modern day site providers.  When I checked the original image it tells me that her surname is Kinley.  I can't find her thereafter, but I investigated the McKinleys a little further.  I think I have found a possible sister Jane who is given the surname Ginlay.

Don't know if this is of any use at all.

Hi Morag  :)

On the 1851 census there is an Isabella  b. Dunscore circa 1829 who might fit:

Mains of Waterside, Keir - 833 ED 4 Page 8

Robert Mells or Mills*, 26, farm labourer, b. ? Dumfriesshire
Isabella , 22, b. Dunscore
Sarah Demster, 17, servant, b. Sanquar

It might be worth following her up

Regards

Think it is her

On SP there is a death showing in 1895 for an Isabella Wells, other surname Laurie. Aged 67

Torphicen, West Lothian.

I think it will be worth you getting this death cert  :)

Thanks Gadget.   I will certainly follow her up.  I really appreciate your help.  I have now found out that Mary McMurdo who married Thomas McKinlay was married before to a Samuel Welsh.   You just never know what you will find next!

Northern Girl

Thanks for looking but I don't think they are the same line.  I did find a family of McKinlays in Balmaghie who were in Dunscore later but don't seem to have any connection at this stage.

I have a James Murray marrying Catherine Hunter in Dalry in 1853.  She was married before to a William Gerrand.  James originally came from Crawfordjohn.  I would be pleased to give you some more info if you think there might be a connection with your Murrays.

Hi Morag - thanks for your reply.  My James definitely died in 1843 - 2nd of July.  He married Elizabeth Shaw circa 1832.
