Census look up for 1881 and 1891-COMPLETED THANKS
« on: Wednesday 05 November 08 10:23 GMT (UK) »
Help wanted in finding William & Esther Thirlaway.
Married in Durham in 1879, the parish register has them as Thirkway, but r/web has the spelling as Thirlaway. Cannot find them on the 1881 census. Are they there? or are they more locatable on the 1891?  Esther bn c1858 and William c 1855.
Thanks,
Hinton.

Hi Hinton,

You didn't give birthplaces so not sure, could this be the couple (indexed as Thirlerway) in Hedworth Jarrow & Monkton?
1881 RG11/5025  Folio 21  Page 36

sometimes it helps to just look under Thir* etc to catch all spelling variations

Hello Barbara,

thankyou for that tip of entering a few letters. I never thought of doing that, and have spent ages on the 81` Census typing in variations.  Will use that in future.  Yes, that is them on Folio 21.
and again in 91.  Whoopee.
Many thanks,
Hinton.

Hi Hinton,

You're welcome!  On ancestry it's sometimes worth just entering forename or just surname, plus maybe date & place of birth - some sites like findmypast have a box to tick for 'variations' too, which helps a lot.  familysearch needs the full name though, which is when you need to type in all sorts of variations
