information for Irish birth certificate copy
« on: Thursday 03 February 05 15:12 GMT (UK) »
Is there anything else I could try here to get enough information to buy a copy of a birth certificate?

My grandfather James Griffin, was born in County Antrim.  I can estimate his date of birth within a six month period in 1885, but I do not know his place of birth. I have his Scottish wedding certificate and so have his parents and possibly brother's name (witness).  He has no children still surviving.  I have studied information on surname distribution and there are about 4-5 possible areas where Catholic families of this name lived.  I cannot find his father's name on Griffith's valuation as I think he would have been to young to be a householder.  Also I have looked at online gravestone inscription but no luck.

I have tried searching for his ? brother Frank in Scottish and English records but again, no luck.

Is there anything else I could try?  I cannot manage to visit Ireland at the moment or consider commisioning research.  I did not expect to get stuck only a few weeks into researching.

Can anyone offer advice please?

Charlotte

Hi,

If you have access  to a family history centre, you can look in the indexes for James's birth. If you have a reference and/or date, you can send for the certificate from the GRO. See my website for useful links.
