aberdein,

Today I had the opportunity to browse abbreviated transcriptions of Bellingham parish records.

Bapts were 1684-1851. Fortunately there was a surname index in alpha-order.

Bapt 17 July 1698, Thomas CORBIT son of John of Ellingham

Born 30 July 1903, bpt 11 Sep 1803 William CORBETT  2nd son of William, hind, of Reedsworth, Bank Head, by his wife Elizabeth

Born 1 Nov 1806, bpt 25 Dec 1806, John 3rd son of William, husbandman, Reedsworth, Bankhead, by his wife Elizabeth Maugham.

And the above three , the only Corbett/Corbit entries ( and no sign of William's first son.

If the family of your George were "non-conformists" then they would have used their "own" church.

In the same era there was a Roman Catholic and a Presbyterian within the area of Bellingham Parish. Unfortunately I did not have access to these church records.

Thanks Michael

I see William and Elizabeth were married 17 Nov 1797 at St John Lee so they appear to have moved about a bit. George may not really have known where he was born I suppose, but he does state on his marriage certificate in 1840 that his father was William Corbett countryman. It does seem likely that William and Elizabeth would have had more than three children but I can`t find any  record of this

aberdein,

With William been a hind/husbandman/counrtryman maybe he had to submit to the annual "hirings" and maybe he had to "flit" once or twice to new employer/place.

Early census enumerators were instructed to record in the "Where Born" column, either " parish of birth" or "place of birth"

With Bellingham Parish covering a large area, maybe George, although born within the boundaries of this parish, but near the border with one of the neighbouring parishes, and that parish church was much nearer in option ??

Michael

George was married in Chester le Street in 1840 and son George was born there in 1843 but I am quite unable to find the family on the 1841 census. However George was a stonemason and worked all over the place, in fact there were three children born in Prussia in the 1850`s

Hi abderdein

The IGI has four children listed for William CORBETT and Elizabeth nee MAUGHAN:

Mary christened 8 March 1801 in Bywell St Andrew
William christened 11 September 1803 in Bellingham
John christened 25 December 1806 in Bellingham

These are extracted records.

There were also Thomas <Corbit> submitted by another researcher. He was christened 27 May 1798 at St John Lee so would be the missing first son.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

I don`t suppose I will ever find out if William and Elizabeth were George`s parents or not.

Aberdein,

Sometimes looking at the naming pattern of a couple's children, can provide clues to the names of the four parents of the couple. Google the "english naming pattern"
