SS Austral 1862
« on: Saturday 08 November 08 20:16 GMT (UK) »
I believe my great grandmother and her sister arrived in Port Adelaide,South Australia, on the Ship Austral in 1862.
She was Emily Sarah Bassett and her Sister Elizabeth.
Any Details about this landfall and the ship would be appreciated
regards Alf

Hi Alf

There is no mention of records surviving on

http://www.saghs.org.au/shipping.htm
Formerly known as Source 313 and now GRG35/48a this section lists the vessels whose records survive in some form from 1836 to 1886.

Have you looked at the State Library of SA?  If you are unable to go there perhaps use their lookup service
http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?area_id=15&nav_id=669

Scroll down the page to Electronic Enquiry form.

Good luck.

Cheers

Hi there Annie  ;D

I had a pretty through search...can't find any records of the Austral around the period Alf is interested.   In the 1880's onwards there was an Austral bringing Unassisted Immigrants to Melbourne, Victoria and to New Zealand but she appears to be have been built in the early 1880's in Glasgow.  Probably more that one ship with that name in the same period just to confuse us poor souls ;D ;D

Cheers for now :)

Oh Annie...I don't know about that :-\   I often find it difficult to find info on a particular ship...especially if there have been several built with the same name....and then they change hands and change name as well ::)  Have a few favourite url's but the best source is google ;D ;D

Cheers

the reason i am chasing the SS Austral is that I found a partial record of my great grand mothers arrival which was something like this
SS Austral
in the cabin Mr and Mrs. Frew
Miss Bassett and Elizabeth
There were no entries for any other people on the passenger list.
And list was not in the records held by the SA Genealogical and Heraldy soc.
All very vague and I wondered if it  were passengers on a trading vessel
There is no record of their father William Bassett on Any ship but I found him living in Adelaide in 1863 and dying 28th December 1864 of Consumption
buried in a pauper grave
Al a little mysterious

Alf that certainly sounds like a trading/cargo vessel with so few passengers.  Could have been an Australian coastal trader ...wonder if they actually landed at Melbourne or Sydney and then sailed on to Adelaide on the Austral.  I do notice that the SAGHS have noted the arrival of vessels with no passengers.

There are obviously many unassisted immigrants who arrived on our shores and their passages were not recorded.

Alf I wonder if this would be any help
Index to ships arriving in South Australia from overseas 1836-1900.  It should be available at the State Library.

Cheers
