Help please -new to Scotlandspeople
« on: Sunday 09 November 08 12:16 GMT (UK) »
Having already spent £24 for credits on this site I would be so grateful of any help.

I am looking into the Ancestry of John Keys who married Mary Brown in 1889 in Partick, Glasgow. I have found the marriage record on Scotlandspeople but can barely read any of the detail. His age is given as 62 and Mary's as 27 but that doesn't fit with other info.
John Keys states he is a widower and gives the names of his previous wives but again I can't decipher, nor can I read the names of John's mother or Mary's father.

Some 10 years earlier the couple had a child (26th Oct 1879 ) Mary Keys who on Scotlandspeople is shown as illegitimate but John Key's name is given on there, and they are very obviously a couple as 2 years later the 3 of them are shown on the 1881 Census at 3 Roclea Terrace,Roxborough St, Govan,Lanark -the same address as given on the birth entry. John's age here is given as 40 (and Mary's 24) and his place of birth Kilmarnock,Ayr.
I have tried looking for John Keys on previous census's but most entries show Ireland as place of birth.
Two years after their marriage John Keys died Jan 1891 -and this time his age is given as 56 -his fathers name is John dec'd and Mary Biggains?? dec'd.Mary his widow is the informant.
John's occupation in all of these is constant i.e. Shoe/bootmaker.
Shortly after is the 1891 census and widow Mary and daughter Mary are shown at Windsor St.(as John's death cert.) but Mary's age is given as 30.
To try and trace Mary's parents without an accurate date of birth and with such a common name is difficult which is why I need to able to decipher her parents names.
I wondered if the clue might be in on young Mary Keys birth certificate which shows the place of birth as 241 Thistle St Glasgow(I think!) - could this be the home of mother Mary's parents ?.
Is there a site where I can search the 1871 census by address to check out the Thistle St connection ?
Sorry for rambling on, would be so pleased to receive any advise

Sandra,

If the image that you have download is illegible, then you should report it to ScotlandsPeople.  There is an option to contact them about illegible images.

From the FAQ page: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/faqs/questions/index.aspx?240

I can't read the information on this image. What should I do?
Please contact our customer support selecting the "Illegible Image" option from the Issue dropdown box on the contact form. In the "Description" field please state as much information you can about the image e.g. name, year, GROS/NAS reference number and the type of image.

Hi Sandra

You may post sections of the cert on here, but not the whole document.   I'll PM you to see if I can help... ;D

There are 82 people enumerated at 241 Thistle Street in  Govan Glasgow in 1871, on a number of seperate household schedules  including this couple:

1871: Hutchesontown , Glasgow Govan, Lanarkshire
Parish 644/10.ED 60, HS 96
Head: John BROWN 33, Fitter In .....? .......?, b Glasgow
Wife; Jane BROWN 37, b Ireland
Boarder: Jessie McADAM 24, F*nisher? Bleachfield, b Glasgow

Mary snr's age was consistent @ 1889 marriage (27) and @1891 (30).
What was her age @ :
1881
1901?
Death?

Cheers

Hi Sandyq,

I think I have found them in 1901 census at 11 Crossmyloof Buildings,

John Keys 33 b 1868 New Monkland - Foreman Papermaker
Mary J Keys 28 b 1873 Ireland wife
Sarah aged 6 b 1895 Glasgow
Janet D aged 4 b 1897 Glasgow
John aged 2 b 1899 Glasgow
James aged 5 mos b 1900 Glasgow

Seems MC should have shown John as 32 not 62.

Tom

Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Hi

The 1889 cert has Mary's parents as Thomas Brown (Handloom weaver)  and Margaret, maiden surname Inglis.

John's mother's maiden name is either Biggain or Biggam

Ages are definiteley 62 and 27
