Elusive WWI record look up please
« on: Monday 10 November 08 04:00 GMT (UK) »
I wondered if any one can find any military record of a Reginald Vernon Kent born in Nottingham 1886. All i know is he imigrated to OZ in 1923 and died of war wounds in Australia in 1934. I cant even say which branch of the service he was in or who he served with.I have had a look at the free ancestry ww1 look up site but cannot find anything listed. Any help is very much appreciated. Many thanks.
Crankyvet.

Hi Crankyvet,

60% of WW1 records were destroyed in the bombing in WW2.

Hi,

You could check the Medal Cards, which are online on Ancestry.

Not all the surviving WW1 papers are available online yet; I think they have got to about "M". It means a wait until they are all available or a visit to the National Archives at Kew to search the records there.

If you have any old photos of him in uniform you could post them on the Armed Forces board and the experts there will try to identify his regiment for you.  If you can find that then a regimental museum or archivist might be able to find some background details for you.

Hi Crankyvet,
You might like to post this query on the Australian board too as the chatters there might help you find his death and the certificate of it, if available, might give you further clues to his service time.

This could be your man?

If he emigrated in twenties he wouldnt have a record in Australia.
Ancestry are putting what the NA has left online at present. Was he discharged through wounds?
If so he may also be in pension records.

Illl have a look

Thanks; yes after service he left the UK on an unasissted passage on a ship called the "Moreton Bay" and arrived with his family in June of 1923.
I will check our national archives in Canberra as they have free searches available and may have a record as you say. An idea for Rootschaters looking for Records in Oz. The War memorial Canberra: http://www.awm.gov.au/ or the national archives http://www.naa.gov.au/. But then again I'm sure most of you knew that anyway.
Many thanks.

Cant see his documents online...although there are a lot just down as Kent. His Medal card hasnt been uploaded yet either so cant check that one either :(

If it is the Royal Engineer one looks like he was originally a Territorial Soldier but need the card to confirm anything else.
