Which 'Mob'??
« on: Monday 10 November 08 10:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
My great uncle Sid from Hackney, London served in the Army during the Second War.
Can anyone identify from the cap badge which regiment he was in please??.
Is that a bayonet by his side? Infantry regiment then??

Any help will be much appreciated
Thank you
Tony

Difficult...But possibly 7th City Of London Royal Fusiliers
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Thanks, Scrimnet, I see what you mean........the rounded base and 'fiery' top do look like a fusilier regiment.

I think it may be fairly early war, he has slip on titles, so around 1940...

There also doesn't appear to be any divisional signs or other tribal distinctions...and he has 1937 ptn uniform, and has the khaki Field Service Cap...Again all pointers to 1939/40...

Was he TA? He appears to in be a tented camp, So drill on grass...Just a thought

and with him in drill order (belt and bayonet for Mk III* SMLE) I would say he's just been doing drill....

The 7th would fit in with him being a Londoner...But beware of "local" Regts in WW2!!

Thanks for your observations Scrimnet.

Sidney was born in 1914 and was unlikely, I think, to have been a regular soldier. The 'training' scenario makes good sense.

Well...I can  tell you for deffo he wasn't Home Guard... ;D

Wrong gaiters (anklets, web) round his ankles, and wrong belt (the HG never wore 37ptn) and wrong bayonet!

Also there is no HG or LDV brassard... ;)

So deffo a "proper" soldier...

By 'not regular' I meant not a career soldier but a territorial called up for the duration.
You spotted the tents. They seem to be hidden away in the trees. It does look kind of temporary doesn't it? I like your drill idea.

I knew what you meant mate! ;)

Just for info that was! 8)

There are several orders of dress for the Army which have changed very little over the years..."Drill Order" is one of them.

Actually given that he only has belt and bayonet on...he could be doing little else!! ;D ;D
