James Hunter Smith 1829
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 09:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to confirn details of James Hunter Smith parents. The IGI has him as christened at Hutton Cranswick on Feb 1st 1829 to parents John and Jane.

However, having followed his family members through various census records, I keep coming back to parents John Smith and Elizabeth and, from IGI, John Smith married Elizabeth Hunter at Hutton Cranswick on April 24th 1827.

Could anyone with access to Hutton Cranswick baptism records check the details of James' baptism in case there was a mistake in transcribing.

Thank-you.

Maurice

Hi Maurice,

This isn't going to be any help but I noticed that a John & Elizabeth had a daughter baptised 23 Jan 1831 & she was named Jane Elizabeth Smith, maybe his mother was named Jane & he just got confused when they asked for the mother's name ???

It has been known for mistakes on the IGI & I agree the only way is my checking the originals.

I've checked the parish records at the RO this morning - and it definetly gives 'Jane' as the mother. Additional info is that their abode was Cranswick and John was a labourer.

I looked to see if I could see a marriage between a John Smith and a Jane in Hutton Cranswick just prior to the baptism (in case John had been widowed and married again) but all I could find was the 24 April 1827 marriage between John Smith & Elizabeth Hunter.
I tend to agree with Gill - it's almost certainly an error by the parish clerk. I think James' middle name is the deal clincher!

Incidentally - in case it means anything, the marriage witnesses were Walter Field and Elizabeth Burton.

Hi Jill,

Many thanks for the look-up and the names of the witnesses, the Field family also links in with what I have.

As for John and Jane or Elizabeth, a leap of faith required perhaps.  ::)

Thanks again,

Maurice
