Turner, Galashiels (completed!)
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 23:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
First of all I'm a complete beginner so i apologise if i sound silly. Recently i found a ww1 medal that belonged to my great granddad and have looked up his medal card. I asked my grandmother about him and all she knew what that she thinks he was from Galashiels and his wife was called Lily. I was wondering how i would find out more? His name is James Turner and at a guess would have been born around 1890?  Unfortunately his son, my grandfather is dead so that is all i know.Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Hi

What was his service number from the medal card?  Is his service record on Ancestry as well,  as you may get additional info from it

Do you have a copy of your grandfathers birth cert as Lily's full name/maiden name will be shown on it.

That info will help to find the marriage of James and Lily

Their marriage cert will have his age and both his parents names

I have checked the Scottish 1901 and there are a number of James Turners b between 1889-1893 but none were living in or born in Galashiels

Hi
Thank you very much for replying and for your help. I really appreciate it! :) Yes his record is on ancestry. His number was S1/4278. My grandfather (His son) died when i was 13 so i didn't really ask about him or find out much. He died before my father was born in 1950 so he knows nothing of him either. I am not 100% sure he was from galashiels, but that is what my grandmother has told me! I am very new to this so don't have a clue where to start looking! My grandmother also told me he played rugby for Scotland but i can't find anything about that on the net and i think it may just be a family rumour.

Hi

The best way forward is as above - starting with your grandfathers birth cert

I don't have a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate i'm afraid. I'm not sure where to start to be honest. I'm not even sure if he was from galashiels it's just what my grandmother told me. All i know about him is his name and his army number.

I have managed to find him at long last! He was indeed born in Galashiels on 17 Nov 1873 to parents John Turner and Ann Turner (nee Cunningham) who were married on the 7 Oct 1870.
James marrried Lily Barrs on 23rd August 1915 in London.
If anyone has any information Re James Turner or his family then i'll be glad to hear from you! Many thanks for everyone's help!!
