nat roll of the great war
« on: Wednesday 12 November 08 18:23 GMT (UK) »
hi all
I'm totally baffled! I have  a subscription to a*****y but cant get any of my grandfathers military records up. I do know abit about him but when I tried to search the 'national roll of the great was' there are no records!! My grandfather was Colonel sydney joseph LOWE born 1880 in Islington London. I do recall I've seen a record for sidney (spelt with the i instead of the y). But cant get anything up.
He served with the Royal Fusiliers and went from
sandhurst,1899, straight to the boer war.
Any help would be grateful

Hi
The National Roll was a pay to be included Roll and it wasnt really National but mainly the Big Cities...Some of the entries have to be taken with a pinch of salt also.
The Best way (although you cant view em on online) is to check the Officers Files at the NA
As a colonel he should have a decent one...Theres a lot of LOWE medal index cards missing at the moment off ancestry i wish theyd herry up cos its one of my family names too!!

Indeed it was Ady, and also it is worth mentioning that the company went bust well before it was anything like complete

Hi Cas,
There are 3 S. Lowe at Kew but no S.J. Lowe, the document references are WO339/80017, WO339/105568, WO339/139382 but no guarantee's that any of them are your relative. Officers papers are all supposed to be there but suprise suprise they most definetely are not and some that are there have been weeded over the years, I have only found about 60% of the officers that I have looked for.
Bloody frustrating isn't it, can you tell us anymore, any awards won, when he died etc.
As Ady has said the National Roll needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, especially in the case of a casualty.
