Coastguard station St Michael's Hastings 1861 - Concluded
« on: Thursday 13 November 08 13:29 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to pinpoint the (former) site of the CG station at St Michael's Hastings. One of my ancestors, Richard Squire, was located there at the time of the 1861 census (RG9/561 Folio 210 Page 75), although his service record calls it Bexhill station.

The address run in to the CG station includes Bohemia Road, now the A21, then Dorset Place and St Michael's Place, all of which I have found. This is followed by Garden Cottages and the Officer's house then the Coastguard station. Would this put it on or near White Rock Road where it meets Carlisle Parade?

Thanks

Clive

Hi there

Yes, the location of the St Michaels Coastguard station was at the back of todays White Rock, up on the hillside.

I have several pictures of same, just got to find them on my computer

Watch this space

Hi Clive

Here is your Coastguard Station - this picture dates to about 1844.

The road on the right was Galley Hill, now Bohemia Road and the road on the left is now Robertson Street.

As you can see, it was on top of the hill at the back of the present White Rock

Hope that helps to put it all into context for you

Hi

Here is a map of about 1848 - you can clearly see the words St Michaels towards the bottom left of the map.

St Michaels on the Rock to be precise

Hi

Here is another picture, this time 1860 after Robertson street had been built up - you can actually see the coastguards on lookout

Would you happen to know if the station was sold in 1866? It is very difficult to decipher the writing in the 'discharge' column of his record but an entry for the end of his CG service on 30/04/1866 appears to begin 'sale of...'

Thanks
