Jeffries or Jeffreys family search

Hello all,

I am looking for information on my grandmother Annie Jeffries/Jeffreys born 8th September 1894 in Scotland, possibly Midlothian? Her father's name was George and I'm told she worked in a circus as a 'strong woman'. She had a son named Arthur George Jeffries (born illegitimate) around 1910-20 (possibly in England)? Annie was married on 1st May 1920 to Frank Layton (1887-1957) in Birmingham, England, where the family remained. Annie died in 1964. Any info from Scotish census would be much appreciated.

I think I have found your grandmother's birth on ScotlandsPeople. She was born 8th Sep 1894 at 7 Caledonian Crescent, Edinburgh. Her father was George Jeffrie, mason and her mother was Mary Jeffrie, m.s. (maiden surname) Norris. They were married 7th March 1884 at Newcastle, England.

I tried to search for the family in the 1901 census for Scotland, but couldn't see them. They may have returned to England by that date.

I searched for George and Mary Jeffrie's marriage in Newcastle using FreeBMD, but I can't find one to match. You might be better posting on one of the English boards to try and find some BMD records and/or census records for the family.

Not sure if you have seen it so just in case  There is a specific board here on RC for travelling people which includes circuses www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,387.0.html

Might help in trying to follow through your grandmother Annie.
