O'Brien family - Ballyporeen, Tiperrary
« on: Friday 14 November 08 23:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am particularly keen to follow up this family line. My 4 times great grandparents James O'Brien and Liddy (Lydia) or Elizabeth Ryan were from Ballyporeen, Tipperary.

They married on the 22nd February 1838 in Ballyporeen. I'd really like to find out more, about them or maybe even their parents. Anyone from Ballyporeen with access to any of these records? How should I go about finding records concerning this family (baptism, birth, marriages etc)

They migrated to Australia between 1864 and 1868.

All I know is that they had the following children;

William O'Brien born Ballyporeen circa 1838/1839
Timothy O'Brien born Ballyporeen
Thomas O'Brien born Ballyporeen
Catherine O'Brien born Ballyporeen
Bridget O'Brien born Ballyporeen
Mary O'Brien born 20th February 1851, Ballyporeen
James O'Brien born Ballyporeen

Any assistance or information is much appreciated,

Kind Regards,

Anthony

there are parish records available on for many parts of the country on www.irish-roots.net - including Co. Tipperary. It looks like the there may be missing registers for Ballyporeen (although maybe it merged into another the parish Templetenny?) but it does seem to include births from 1817-1828 and marriages from 1818-1875.

The index is free to search once you register, to view a transcript costs €5.

Co. Tipperary is divided into two areas known as 'Ridings' for many purposes and Ballyporeen is in Tipperary South Riding.

There's 10 O'Briens on Griffith's Valuation (1847 and 1864) for the Town of Ballyporeen, including a James, who leases a House & Garden at no. 33 Main Street from a Henry O'Brien in the town. (Henry is listed also listed as owning 'a plantation' of c34 acres outright.)

Hi Jane,

My line's through William.

Be great to find out more about this family, I don't know a great deal.

Do you have any other information on James and Lydia and their children?

Kind Regards,

Anthony

That was a quick reply.
I visited Ballyporeen last year. There was not a lot to be found.
My great grandmother died of the flu in 1918 and is buried in Bulimba Brisbane.
Lydia is buried in Gympie but I think James died in Ireland.
I will dig out the information for you tomorrow.
Jane
