Alfred Charles Chell?Any ideas?
« on: Monday 17 November 08 13:41 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a  birth record for this soldier in order to find his parents.

Guardsman ALFRED CHARLES CHELL
2617566, 5th Battalion, Grenadier Guards
died age 27
26 January 1944
(Anzio War Grave, Italy).

There is some military information and there are old school records from Dover grammer School and a likely marriage of a Chell in Dover in 1915 who just might be his father. But all my searches have just drawn blanks on a date of birth.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks
Coleman, Colebrooke,(London) Gilson, Rattue, Matticks before 1780(Wessex)

The CWGC site says he was the  Husband of Emma Foster Chell, of Glasgow. So he could have been born in Scotland.

I just wonder whether it's worth investigating the Chell marriage at Dover, Mar 1915 2a 1819:

Frederick D Chell to

Carmen S H Fox or Carmen S Heath-Fox

Carmen is likely to the Carmen Sibyl Fox whose birth was registered Dec 1890 Camberwell 1d 755

Frederick is likely to be the Frederick David Chell whose birth was registered Sep 1899 1889 Fulham 1a 315

Carmen was with her parents and siblings in Buckland St Andrews (Dover RD) in 1901 as Carmen S Fox.  She was born in Dulwich so had a SE London connection.

I can see no sign of any children born to this couple.  I wonder whether Alfred might have been adopted by them (informally, as statutory adoption as we now understand it was not introduced until 1927).

When you say you have looked on "the bmd", have you been through the full GRO index (as opposed to FreeBMD, which won't yet cover the relevant period) to trace Alfred's marriage to Emma?

Hi,
No had just done the free BMD....I didnt realise there was any difference.

I was wondering about the "Charles" Chell on that registered Lambeth. Its about the right time but obviously missing his first name.
Off to look at the GRO
