Hi Annie,

This may not be any easy one.  I can't find a place Inver hall or Inverhall.  There is Inverhallan/Inverhallen in Argyll - other side of the country.

Inver derives from the gaelic word "inbhir" meaning a river confluence or where a river reaches the sea, hence Inverness, Inverailort, Inveraray.  So I would expect to see a river named hall or similar close by.  And I can't find one  :-\

What was the context?  Any idea of other places nearby?  Might it be a bad transcription or bad handwriting?

There is an Inveraldie just north of Dundee; Inverarity a bit further north near Forfar; Inverharity in the Glen Isla area.  There are other Inver- in the area, but none either short enough or with a suitable sounding name.

Annie,

Just done some scouting around and someone else is looking for Inverhall in Forfarshire.

They have posted a postcard and the address looks like Inverkal to me.  Someone at the post office (?) has added "by Inverkeilor" at the bottom.  In Scotland, "by X" like that can sometimes mean a very long way from X, especially in the more remote areas.  By I would not have said that was necessarily the case here.  I think it may have been close to Inverkeilor and the fact that it is not marked on a modern map, may mean that it has either changed names or disappeared.  It may have been just one house.

Don't know if this helps you.
