"The Sorn" Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 18 November 08 02:58 GMT (UK) »
My late garandmother Mary Cameron Mcghee was reportedly one of the first tram conductresses in Glasgow during WWI. She eventually married her first cousin Donald Campbell, a 5ft tall blacksmith from Oban but only after coming to sydney australia in 1919.

He came to australia 1912 but had to wait for the war to end before she could emigrate in. Her father (first name unknown to me) reportedly owned several houses in Glasgow on a corner block called "the Sorn" where the families lived.
Does anyone know the address of these houses or have any information on the McGee / Magee ?? family

Alternatively Donald Campbell grew up in high st Oban (no. 25?) and his blacksmith shop in Oban is reported to be preserved as a heritage sight. It would be great to learn any info about Mary Magee the Clippy or Donald Campbell the Blacksmith. ???

I've not heard of a block of houses called "The Sorn".
However, there is a Sorn St in the East End of Glasgow.

You may do well to post this request in the Lanarkshire board as well.

Do you know when Mary was born?
As far as I can see, there were only 2 Mary Cameron McGhee (any spelling) in the whole of Scotland.
1.1887 in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire
2.1890 in St Rollox, Glasgow

If we can decide which of these it is, if either, then the registry entry will give her address and both parents names, occupations and possibly the date of their marriage.

Dave

PS. It would also help if you gave date, or even approximate date, of birth of Donald.

Found out today since original posting. Donald was born 1/9/1881 at 21 high st Oban not 25. Father Donald, mother Flora nee MacFarlane, brothers Duncan and Angus.
Mary was younger than Donald and had an adopted brother John or Jock

Mary McGhee and Donald were cousins. Her mother's maiden name was Campbell

OK, not knowing Mary's age I took a chance and purchased the registry entry for the birth in Glasgow and it looks like we may have got lucky.

Mary Cameron McGhee born 15 Dec 1889 at 181 Stirling Road, Glasgow*
Birth registered by father on 3 Jan 1890.
Father George McGhee, railway companys parcel deliverer
Mother Catherine m.s. Campbell
They married 24 June 1887

Someone can maybe look up 1901 census for you which will give names of siblings in 1901 and address where living then (and father's occupation).

I'm getting this info from ScotlandsPeople
( http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk )
This is a pay per view site.  You'll need to register but costs are very reasonable.  I've only spent a couple of pounds to find out this much.  Minimum purchase is £6GBP for 30 credits.  A copy document costs 5 credits.

It should be easy for you to locate the marriage of George and Catherine given that you now have their names and date of marriage.  That in turn will give you their agesand both sets of Mary's grandparents.

This all looks very hopeful but you need to try and find Hanna's birth to confirm we have correct family.

I'll have a quick look for some info on Donald.

Dave

*PS, my grandmother worked in a bakery in Stirling Road.  I can send you a photo if you want.

I'll send you a PM with my email address.  That way I can send you the birth record I found.  No point in you using credits for it as well.

Well, that confirms we have the correct family.
Couldn't find Hannahs birth but that is because we thought she was younger so I looked from 1890 onwards.

Haven't tried earlier.  I'll leave that to you Pete.

Can't find Donald in 1881 either.  Not in Oban anyway.  There are 5 possible births elsewhere in Argyll, a couple more likely than others.

I'm getting a bit tired now.  It's nearly 6am and I haven't had a kip yet so I'll sign off before I start making mistakes.

I'll come back to the thread.
