Joseph PATTERSON & Lisnairble Townland
« on: Tuesday 18 November 08 07:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I am trying to help someone in the states. Her grandfather, Joseph PATTERSON was from Tyrone.
She has a shipping record where he arrived in the USA with sister, Rebecca Jane and brother William headed to two more brothers in Massachusetts (Cambridge and Manchester)
Mother was listed as living in Lisnairble??
There was a fant trace on the shipping manifest that indicated that Mom's name might be Ann or Annie and maybe Haran or someother surname beginning with H (She ust have remarried)
And there's a family legend about her having spent time in New Zealand......but that's all very vague.
And there's a family legend that her maiden name was Coll or Cole and that she was very connect to the Cole/Coll estate.

With regard to Lisnarble, her maternal grandmothers townland, it appears that it no longer exists.
I'm trying to get PRONI to reply to an email requesting info on what entity absorbed it, if any.
In the case of my grandmothers townland, they turned it into a forest because all the residents, except one left for the USA...and the one who stayed died in 1999. Sad but true.

Were any of the Boston Pattersons names Rebecca, William, George, or David/Daniel?
These folks all lived in Cambridge, Boston, and Manachester, MA
They were my Paternal GF's siblings.  There are probably more.  Bust these I can confirm from shipping records.
The Pattersons of the South Island in NZ include: George(international company) , James(farmer of historical note in New Plymouth), William (hotellier, I think) , Mary (married to James) and "E.H" (probably Edward who wound up living in NY State.
and they were also  connected in New York State to Kauri gum importation and to hardware sales in NYC.
George owned at least one ship.

Has anyone information on this Lisnairble/Lisnarble townland?

Is anyone familiar with Joseph PATTERSON or any of the others mentioned above?

Can anyone help take this forward please?

Townlands don't disappear, even if people leave the boudaries still remain. Lisnarable townland, 341 acres is in the parish, barony and Poor Law Union of Clogher.
See www.thecore.com/seanruad to find details of townlands and parishes in Ireland (be sure to change default setting from exact match to search part of a name).

One detail which I can't see in your post is the date that Joseph Patterson left Ireland.

Griffith's Valuation (1860) shows an Andrew Pattison in Lisnarable.

ok, more on Joseph Patterson:

Particulars on Joe Patterson:

Joseph Patterson born 1875 place unknown. Legend is that he was born aboard ship in Belfast Harbor as his mother was returning from New Zealand.

Mother: Margaret or Ann(ie) Cole Patterson (I have no idea if that was a maiden or married name but she had 5 other kids called Patterson so I'm assuming 'married' as the default.

Emmigrated to Boston in 1907.,  He was 32 and single. Married my GM in 1916 or 1917
Applied for US citizenship in 1932
Died in 1948.  His gravesite is unknown.....a .long and sad family story there.

Joseph's sibling's names:  Rebecca Jane, William, George*, David  (or Daniel)*
Asterisked sibs lived in Cambridge, MA and Manchester, MA in 1907 when the 3 other sibs  (Joe, Rebecca Jane, and William) arrived.

Joe could not read or write.....despite the approval of his citizenship application.
William was a butler
Rebecca was a nurse

I've heard of another sister named Jane....but cannot find a record of her.
I also heard of an aunt named Gertrude who hung out at and then was salon hostess at an artist's colony in Ogonquit Maine.

Joe's address in Boston was 132 Day St, Jamaica Plain.  He owned property all over Boston/
Jamaica Plain/ West Roxbury by 1925.  His step daughter lived all of her married life in one of the properties
on Redlands Road in West Roxbury.

Hope someone can help with this.

You've posted this on Co. Tyrone board and I've given you details of the townland Lisnarable but can't understand the connection to Joseph Patterson who went to U.S.

If Joseph was born in 1875 his birth should have been registered. If the story about being born aboard ship is true it might be listed under U.K. Marine Registers but that's just a guess.

For information on the Pattersons in U.S. suggest you start a thread on the U.S. board for help but be sure to link it to this thread to avoid needless duplication.

Joseph's death certificate (providing he died in Massachusetts) should list names of both parents and other details- as supplied by the informant. His marriage certificate should also have details which he would have had to provide so may be more accurate.

Hi there,

My g-grandfather was David Patterson. He started out in Cambridge and then moved to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia with his wife. His parents were Andrew Patterson and Annabella Cole. There was family lore about Australia/New Zealand and a large family.

I've found information on other brothers and sisters born in Ireland. I'd love to compare notes, my email is (*).

thanks!
