On a recent trip to Belfast I stumbled across this "Scrutton’s” building in the dock area, shown here: https://www.google.com/maps/@54.6226181,-5.9156199,3a,37.5y,293.86h,88.54t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sI6WmLwetNxVFm7Jc7oGm_Q!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

My Scrutton family history has it that my Great, Great, Grandfather was a successful Stevedore from the East End of London, but I don’t know any more than this, if that is correct?

I’m presuming there’s a London/Belfast family connection here somewhere? A quick search in Google looks like the Scrutton family were/are involved in shipping and property. It would be interesting to know the factual story behind the Scrutton family name in business, if you can help please?

Hello Ralph, and welcome to Rootschat.

On the Scruttons, I can't really add much to what has already been said on page 1 of this thread, as I've not looked at this line for years, as I hit several brick walls, and found it difficult to connect into what Tony Scrutton let me know of his researches.

It could be worth you trying to get hold of that "The history of Scruttons : shipbrokers and shipowners 1802-1926 : stevedores, master porters and cargo superintendents 1890-19674" by A.E. Jeffery I mentioned. I see the British Library has a copy, so it should be possible to get it via inter-library loan.  Not sure if this link is a fixed link, or a dynamic link, but here it is: http://explore.bl.uk/primo_library/libweb/action/display.do?tabs=moreTab&ct=display&fn=search&doc=BLL01010522611&indx=1&recIds=BLL01010522611&recIdxs=0&elementId=0&renderMode=poppedOut&displayMode=full&frbrVersion=&frbg=&&dscnt=0&scp.scps=scope%3A%28BLCONTENT%29&vl(2084770704UI0)=any&tb=t&vid=BLVU1&mode=Basic&srt=rank&tab=local_tab&dum=true&vl(freeText0)=the%20history%20of%20the%20scruttons&dstmp=1647945721302

I've just discovered that unfortunately I've mislaid my copy: I must have put it somewhere safe, when I reorganised to create a home office in March 2020.
