James Bowden marriage
« on: Thursday 20 November 08 09:59 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the marriage of my ancestor James Bowden. He was a Roman Catholic born in Co Louth in 1835 and left home to join the British Royal Marines. He was married sometime between April 1871 and March 1875. I have discovered that he was on board the ship HMS Revenge for most of that period and this ship was based in Queenstown, Co Cork. I suspect he married a Cork girl. What can I do now?

Do you know the name of the bride? If not, did they have any children? (birth certificates should list mother's name)

I know the date he left the Marines (25 March 1875) and that he was married by then. But in the 1871 census (done in April that year), he was single. So he married between those dates. There is no record of his marriage in England or Wales, so I guess he must have been married in Ireland where his ship was based. I don't know the name of his wife because I can't find him or his family on the British 1881, 1891, or 1901 censuses. Again, I guess he must have retired back home in Ireland.

If you knew the bride's name you could probably order the marriage certificate from GRO as you have a range of 1871-1875 which is why I asked if you've found any children. Is 1875 the last record you have for him? If so, I'm puzzled how he can be an ancestor of yours if there's no information about him, wife or children.

Registration of BMDs started in Ireland in 1864 so you could ask at www.groireland.ie/fees.htm

I think they charge 10 euro for it on a nice piece of paper and 6 euros for the information as a scan on plain paper. I would phone them.

Didn't suggest sending for the certificate as name of bride isn't yet known.

James is the brother of my great-great-grandmother. I have records of both their baptisms in Tinure, Mullary, Co Louth. I also have a record of James's career in the Royal Marines.

Thank you shanew147 for the list of James Bowden marriages. It says Church Baptisms, but I presume they are marriages?

I have sent off for the marriage certificate from the GRO in Roscommon.
