COMPLETED WW1 Draft Registration Cards
« on: Saturday 22 November 08 08:23 GMT (UK) »
Would someone be good enough to look up a WW1 Draft Registration entry:

Smith Appleyard born 13 August 1874, residence given as Louisville, Kentucky.

This would tie in very nicely with one of my Appleyards who emigrated to America in 1911 with his wife Mary, although the Louisville address seems odd.  1920 census shows them in Bristol, Rhode Island and the 1930 census shows them in Mineral, West Virginia.  My Smith Appleyard was certainly born in 1874 in Halifax, Yorkshire.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thank you so much, dollylee, that's the one!  Absolutely what I'd hoped to see.  Again many thanks.

I don't know if this will help you, but with such an unusual name, I'm always tempted to see what's out there.

Cumberland (Maryland) Evening Times, 14 May 1930
Under a headline that says "Keyser, W.Va." -
"Smith Appleyard is critically ill at Hoffman Hospital."

Also, there's a passenger list from Liverpool to Boston in Aug. 1922 which has Annie Appleyard coming to join her brother Smith Appleyard, Sowansett Ave., Warren, R.I.

Hi shellyesq - now that is also very interesting.  The 1930 census does show him to be resident in Keyser.  Any ideas how to access the newspaper report?  I live in the UK.

It's available on newspaperarchive.com, which is a pay site.  That one sentence is all that's in there, though.

Thanks once again, shellyesq.  It's good to put together some sort of pattern to lives.  He obviously did a bit of travelling around - 1918 when he enlisted he was in Kentucky, then Rhode Island and then West Virginia.  He originated in Halifax in Yorkshire, was married in Scotland and then emigrated to America in 1911.  I also decided just a couple of minutes ago to do a Google on him and found him and Mary in someone's family tree, so have sent off a message and will see what that brings in.  I do like people with unusual names - it makes it a bit easier to trace them!!  That's why my other interest is in the Archbell surname, but I've yet to make the connection between my English families and those in America.

Again, thanks for your help.
