Where is Doanstone Rider???
« on: Saturday 22 November 08 09:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
Would someone be able to tell me where Doanstone Rider is please?
I have a Donald Walker leaving from this port (according to an*****y) aboard "Lismore" in 1889  for Australia.

I cant seem to find this place anywhere in Scotland.
Thank you for your help
Regards
Mariac

Is there an original image which you could let us see? Ancestry transcriptions are often highly suspect.

So what you need is for someone to come up with where Lismore sailed from. I'm sure there will be someone who knows.

Hi again Jen,
Sorry I have just realized that I can view the original. And  I can now understand your saying the transcriptions are highly suspect.
What they have as Doanstone Rider is in fact Johnstone River  and it does show me that Donald Walker was in the crew of the ship.
I did not realize that the original could be viewed ......stupid me..  Live and learn
Thanks again
Regards
Mariac

Well I'm glad you have solved it. I sometimes wonder what Ancestry transcribers are seeing!

Though in the next breath, I have to add that I am very grateful for all the work they do.  :)

The main point to remember when viewing Ancestry transcriptions is that they have not been been done by people, like, for example FreeCen transcriptions which are done by volunteers. As I understand it, Ancestry's transcriptions use data software programs which read the films into text....and there we have the results many a time.... ::)

That would explain some things. I have always just assumed it was some person who didn't know an area well enough to be able to decipher place names. But sometimes the transcription of a really obvious christian name is just byond belief. It makes searching very exciting - you never know what you're going to get!

That is very interesting Monica.
Like Jen I had always assumed it was someone not knowing the area they were transcribing.

Can I ask another question on this family here or should I start a new topic? It is in regard to census for them.
Thanks
Mariac
