1891 Census look up please - Payne
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 10:42 GMT (UK) »
I would be most grateful for any help in finding my grandparents in the 1891 Census - have tried every which way to no avail :-\

They got married in 1888 in Wandsworth - John Payne to Charlotte Eliza Haywarc.

In 1901, they were living at Crooked Lane, Milton, Gravesend, with their children
William 12, John 10, Charles 8, May 3, and Alice 1.  Another child, Albert 6, was living with his grandparents in Wandsworth.
Payne, Webster, Johnstone, Kent.    Hayward, Wing- Roehampton,Barnes,Putney.

Hi Gillyg

Have you found any of the birth registrations for the children, particularly the older ones as that would at least give you clue to their whereabouts?

It could well be that they are mistranscribed or simply that they were missed off the census.

Hi Kerry
Thanks so much for your quick response.
My grandmother seems to have alternated her children's births between Wandsworth and Gravesend. i.e.
William Payne, 12, b.Putney
John, 10, b.Gravesend
Charles, 8, b.Wandsworth
May3, b. Gravesend
Alice, 1, b.Wandsworth
At least, that's how they are recorded in the 1901 Census.
Grandmother's name was Charlotte Eliza Hayward.

That's them Casalguidi - Brilliant, thank you.
Denton is a little 'sub-parish' of Milton - I was born and brought up there.  Looking at the age of John - 10 in the 1901 Census, it's possible that my grandmother Charlotte was in the Workhouse giving or about to give birth, since it was used as a lying-in hospital.
