Clean up and date please?
« on: Monday 24 November 08 09:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters,

Please could you have a go at cleaning up/making clearer the below photo. It is of Longbrook Street in Plympton St. Maurice, Devon.

Any idea on the date would be great as well.

Many thanks!!  :)

Hello Tamar
What a great picture. These stock photo's were popular 1890-1900's and produced for sale
to the public. As most of the subjects are men, boys & girls it's hard to tell which decade, but looking
at the woman in the doorway on the right I would say 1890's.It would help,if you have the original
to show all of the photo including edges & reverse. Is on a playing card size card(cabinet card) or a
postcard.Is there a photographer's name.That sort of thing.

Same street? There's a tree and what looks like a churchyard wall..

Little girls costumes look a bit 1900/10 to me.
The woman in the doorway seems to have a full skirt, so I shouldn't think it would be later.

THANK YOU  ;D to Jim, Terry, China and Paula - all your help is very much appreciated!

Terry - thanks for the lovely tidy up - super job!

Paula thanks for your guess at period. We thought it might be roughly 1900, but thought we would see what the eagle-eyed Rootschatters thought as well  ;)

China - thank you for the link. At the top of your link photo is a T-junction, and Longbrook Street runs across to left from there. The older photo is actually taken looking down that road. The more recent snap was taken in the 60's or 70's, by which time new houses had been built were some of the old cottages appear in our snap. (My Mum & Dad live in Longbrook Street now, and the photo I loaded up is one of my Mums collection of the old village.)

Jim - unfortunately the copy we have is an obvious reproduction postcard of the original image. It has been badly cropped, cutting off the writing at the bottom which part of says "Longbrook Street", but not enough remains to work out the rest. Nothing on reverse, no photographers name - a shame, but we have not seen this image before, so it had to be purchased!

Many thanks to you all for your help, my Mum will be most pleased!  ;D
