KEYES / KEYS 1901 Limerick Census Lookup
« on: Tuesday 25 November 08 13:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am looking to locate my grandfather whom i understand was born in Limerick in 1899.
What i know of the family is that my Grandfather was called Gus - It is understood that this was an abbreviation of Augustine ( I have a record for a Gustavus, I'm working to validate if this if accurate or just coincidence)
I understand that he had two brothers Jack & John, both slightly older than him.

He went on to spend some 30 years in the Irish Army.

My granddad often talked that his dad or granddad as a lordmayor but i suspect this was the gargle speaking as i can see no lord mayor by the name of Keyes / Keys that fits the period - I guess it could have been his maternal Grandfather but i suspect it was just gargle!!

Appreciate any help possible

Marc, I would be interested in speaking with you about your Keyes ancestry as I am also researching this name in Limerick.  My grandfather was Henry Keas, who was from Patrickswell village, and I got interested in the surname and its variants, Keays, Keyes, Keas, Keayes many years ago and have a small database of the surname for Limerick and Tipperary.  I'd be interested in seeing how you fit in and talking with you further.

Michael Keyes, the mayor in 1928 (and also TD for a period) had a large family, and is actually thought to be descended from a group in Abington civil parish who spell their name Keays.  The family is also remembered for founding the Garryowen Football Club.

The surname is found in Limerick as far back as Penders Census (1656), and the oldest documented existence of it in Limerick is for a Christopher Keays, who acted as mayor, sheriff and basically a high muckety muck in the mid 1600s.  He was survived by a son Christopher when he died in 1678.
Tipperary, Limerick

Hi there, yes i would be interested to know what info you have and where it might fit in with your data. I have several posts with data regarding the Keys/Keyes see below - also my keyes are linked by marriage to the nestors.

I shall document what i have in a day or two (Xmas & kids beckon)

Hi Cindy,
Thanks for your interest in my KEYES family post.
I shall detail what i know and note what i think etc.
and hopefully we may be able to identify a cross over or
you may have data that helps fill some of the gaps.

My Grandad, Gus, was born Augustine KEYES on his Church record
and Augustine KEYS on his civil record. Interestingly the civil document
looks like Gustavius KEYS.

Church Baptism Record
Name:Augustine Keyes   Date of Baptism / Birth:07/09/1899
Parish / District: ST. JOHN'S
County:   Co. Limerick
Denomination: Roman Catholic
Father:   John Keyes
Mother:   Margaret Nestor

Civil Birth Record
Name:   Augustine Keys   Date of Baptism / Birth:03/10/1899
Address:   2 Clare Street   Parish / District:LIMERICK NO 1
County   Co. Limerick
Denomination: Civil Record
Father:   John Keys
Mother:   Margaret Nestor
Occupation: Book Binder
Informant 1: Margaret Keys
Note the contradiction of Birth Vs baptism date.

From this i was able to find the Marriage Cert:
Church Marriage Record
Date of Marriage:   27/07/1895
Parish / District:   ST. MUNCHIN'S County:   Co. Limerick
   Husband      Wife
Name:    John Keyes   Margaret   Nestor
Denomination: Roman Catholic
   Husband's Father      Wife's Father
Name:    Keyes         Nestor

and then i located them on the 1901 Census:
1901 Census Record
Household Number    1       District Electoral Division:    LIMERICK NO. 6
Address:    Lough Quay
Limerick City
Limerick City       Parish    UNDEFINED
County    Co. Limerick

Name   Surname   Occupation   Age   Relationship   Origin
John   Keyes   Bookbinder   33   Householder   Co. Limerick
Catherine   Keyes         60   Mother      Co. Limerick
John   Keyes         4 Months   Son      Co. Sligo
Agustus   Keyes         1   Son      Limerick City
Richard   Keyes   Scholar      2   Son      Limerickcity
Michael   Keyes   Scholar      4   Son      Limerick City
Margaret   Keyes         24   Wife      Limerick City

Then has obvious shared the names of siblings, whom my aunt only knew as John & Jack - whom
were older than GUS, i have not found any solid info on these yet - 'Jack' whom i assume is JOHN
went to the USA but was back in Dublin several times in the 1960s - GUS died in 1972 in the Southside
of Dublin where my aunt, his eldest daughter still lives.

I noted that Johns mother was listed and based on her age , Johns age and the basis that the eldest son was named Michael, i found the birth cert for John Keyes
Church Baptism Record
Name:   John Keyes   Date of Baptism / Birth: 29/03/1868
Address:   Not Recorded   Parish / District: CASTLECONNELL
County   Co. Limerick
Denomination:   Roman Catholic
Father:   Michael Keyes   Mother: Catherine Hogan
Informant 1:   Jn Keyes
Informant 2:   My Ryan

based on this i sought out Johns Mother CATHERINE HOGAN, whom was born circa 1840 based on the
1901 census data - i have yet to download this data due to cost but i am sure that her record is there...

As for Margaret NESTOR, i have a birth cert which matches age etc, and the name of her second son but i
have a niggling doubt - here is the info, then i shall explain my doubts

Church Baptism Record
Name:   Margaret Nestor   Date of Baptism / Birth:   23/04/1876
Parish / District:   KILDIMO
County   Co. Limerick
Denomination:   Roman Catholic
Father:   John Nestor   Mother:   Bridget Hickey
Occupation:
Sponsor 1 James Madigan
Sponsor 2: Maria Wade

My doubts arise from there being a AUGUSTINE NESTOR, also resident in Clare St, on the 1901 census
but the ages are a little off and if the naming of childer runs true, then this could be John Nestors brother
- anyway more work needed there.

Some other info and thoughts i have :
I know that Margaret Nestor died probably before 1910 as i am told that John KEYES remarried, and i
have seen a photo of Gus and his brothers as young lads with their new and younger Step-mother.
I have not made any progress on this marriage, though i understand they did not produce any further children.
As for the death of Margaret Nestor, the certs i acquired do not match the circumstances of my Margaret Nestor t

One niggle,(Yeah, another) my Grandad always claimed that his Father / grandfather was a Lord mayor of Limerick,
which from the certs is clearly not the case, and i wondered if it could be via the NESTORS or HOGANS but i cant
see anything reliable - just a thought to keep in mind.

By way of completing the Story of Gus, he moved to South Dublin, married my Nan, Mary (Molly) Cunningham of Tullamore
and joined the Irish army. Served for the maximum term before retiring andworking for Aer Lingus. He died Christmas eve
in 1972 and is interned at Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin alongside two of his sons, Augustine whom died aged 4, and Frank whom died aged 17.
It has proven hard to get info from Aunts and uncles on Gus as i gather he was not the best of Fathers and family are reluctant
to speak well of him.
I have requested his military records from the Irish army in the hope it might throw up some additional info i can use.

Well thats me for now - I look forward to your thoughts on this lot!!

Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Duit

Hi , My grandfather was Patrick Keyes , i think hes the younger brother of Augustine Keyes and John Keyes . he appears in the 1911 census . Augustine Keyes was a member of the  Royal Munster Fusiliers in 1919  and lists his next of kin as Mrs Keyes 8 Bishop St., he served for a year in Warwick as does John Keyes who served the Uk for a year Sandra.
