War record for Thomas Eagles
« on: Friday 28 November 08 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Could anyone help with finding the First World war record for  Thomas Eagles?

He was born Oct 1889 in Liverpool, married to Eliz Titherington 26 Mar 1917 in Liverpool. Family stories tell that he died in this war but as he had a son  born 11 Aug 1919 I think if this was true he must have been very unlucky in being one of the last to die. ???

I have tried the Ancestry website with no luck and unfortunately do not have access to the other sites.

Hi,

Thinking sideways here...........do you have a copy of the son's birth certificate?
If so, who registered the birth and how is Thomas described?  If he was a serving soldier it will be shown under "occupation of father".

I had a look at www.cwgc.org. but could not see him there.

Hi Nanny Jan

Yes,  of course .. how silly of me ;D . He is obviously still live and kicking at the birth of his son and is down as  a Dock labourer/ ex army.  I have been so engrossed in trying to find his war service record, I had forgotten to keep checking and comparing the info I did have.  So thanks for that.

Any idea where I might find his records?

Hi,

Are you aware that 60% of service records form WW1 were destroyed in the bombing in WW2?

I've found some of my ancestors in the "burnt records" but nothing for the others.  :(

Yes but I thought (and I suppose there was  a bit of wishing too) that they were of soldiers killed. I suppose this must be the case?

Hi,

Not always; I found records for my gt.grandpa (died 1919) and one of his sons (died c1950s)  but nothing for my grandfather (died 1961); even though I have a photo of him in uniform.  :-\

I'm not sure that Ancestry have all the records; best place to try is The National Archives at Kew.
