Name of Witness - Bangor Wedding
« on: Friday 28 November 08 18:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help me decipher the name of a witness at a 1860 Bangor wedding? The first witness is Valentine KELLY and the second witness is Sarah Anne BUNLING or BUNKING or something else? Anyone got any suggestions on the surname of the second witness?

I'm also trying to find the second witness, Sarah Anne on the 1861 census. A year after the marriage the bride and groom, Thomas Moore and Catherine Kelly, were living in Holyhead:
Source Citation: Class RG9; Piece 4372; Folio 75; Page 44.

Any help / suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks for reading, Rowan  :)

Hi,

The marriage took place in the Roman Catholic Chapel, Bangor (not sure which church this is) on the 30th June 1860.

Groom: Thomas Moore (21)
Bride: Catherine Kelly (18)

Many thanks, Rowan  :)

I think too it is sarah Anne Bunting

on the old handwriting it was very common for the "t" 's not to be crossed

Many, many thanks to CaroleW and Suz,

I'm sure it is BUNTING without the 'T' crossed. I've just looked at the 1861 census and Sarah Anne is living very near to the MOORE and KELLY households. Also, Sarah Anne's father is recorded as "Foreman of Masons" and both Thomas Moore and Valentine Kelly were masons.

I'm made-up. Thanks again, Rowan  :D

Hi, there is a catholic church on Caernarfon Road in Bangor, and a very old cemetry accross the road to it. I don't know of any catholic church/chapel in Bangor and I can't find any record either, so this could be the one.

I've just been Google'ing and may have come up with something.

It took me a good while (not your average straight forward Google) but I think I found a possibility for the Roman Catholic Chapel.

At Victoria Park in Bangor is there a Catholic Church? I've looked through the Wrexham Diocese web-page and found the following reference:

The Parish of Our Lady and St. James, Bangor in the county of Gwynedd

Our Lady and St. James
Holyhead Road
Bangor
Gwynedd

Ty’r Offeiriad (I'm sorry, I don't know what this means. Any suggestions?)
6 Victoria Park
Bangor
Gwynedd
LL57 2EW

I feel like I'm getting somewhere although I'm not sure I'm quite there yet  ;).

Best Wishes, Rowan  :)

Offeiriad means priest, clergyman, etc. so I'd say it meant Priest's house/Presbytery

PS - also agree with the others re Sarah Anne Bunting  :)
