Lt S H Snelgrove.... translation required
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 15:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

Could someone help me with a translation please.

The attached is from an Enquiry made by the British War Office on behalf of the father of Lt Sidney Henry Snelgrove, attached to the 7th Bn KRRC, who was reported missing in action 30/31st July 1915 at Hooge.

I can guess the drift of it, but am hoping that someone can give me a proper translation.

Many thanks,
Phil

Thank you Barbara,

That's very helpful.

He was last seen by another officer leading his men across the open towards trenches held by the Germans. His body was never recovered.

Thanks again,

Phil

Blimey... :o

I think that is the earliest "wind up" jacket (rank on shoulder, and not a Guardsman) that I have ever seen!

Nice...
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Andy,

Thank you, that's great.
He appears on Forest Row War Memorial (East Sussex), which I'm working on at the moment.

I have what remains of his service record, should you ever want it.

Thanks again,

Phil
