Help with Mikledalehaugh & Arkletoun in Ewes Parish
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 16:29 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for an Adam Elliot of Ewes, the father of Elizabeth Elliot in the parish of Ewes in 1732.

The Baptism of Elizabeth Elliot 27 Aug 1732 daughter of Adam Elliot of Mikledalehaugh Ewes. (No mothers name given)
There is also a John Elliot Bap Ewes 10 Mar 1728 son of Adam Elliot - no place. Wondering if this could be this could be Elizabeths brother.

Now the only Adam I can find around the same time is an Adam Elliot of Arkletoun (Arkleton) Ewes who marries a Christian Elliot on  11 Oct 1733.

I am wondering if these places are so close together that they were as one and that there was only one Adam. If he was married before, then his wife died in 1732 and he was married again to Christian Elliott 1733.

Can any one tell me if these two places could have been counted one and the same or has any ideas on the two Adam's.

Are there any records of deaths in the Ewes area for Elliots around 1732/33.

Grateful for any suggestions to follow up.

Judy

I have just had a look on the OS website
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/
and Arkleton and Meikledale are very close together.  I can't find a Meikledalehaugh but I am assuming it was in the same area.  It is a definite possibility that they could have been counted as one.

If you want to find it, look for Langholm and then follow the Ewes Water north and you'll get to them eventually.

Hope this helps

i used the same tactic on this site and found Meikledalehaugh just north of Arkleton cottages (once again using langholm as a starting point).

Thanks Claire,
I have now found Arkleton near Meikledalehaugh on www.streetmap.co.uk thanks to your spelling. It looks like Meikledalehaugh could be an area rather than an exact spot. There is a Meikledale there too.

Any one know what 'haugh' means?
