« on: Sunday 30 November 08 10:56 GMT (UK) »
im seeking help connecting my grandmother irene priddle with a man called lionel joy and his family.during the late thirties my grandfather eric jacobs was living with his family in stone street, faversham.a couple of doors away lived a lionel joy,he ran a small photography shop in faversham.i believe his family was from the ashford area.at some point my grandmother irene priddle and her father came to live with the joys.this is how she came to meet my grandfather.she then moved in with him, only to move back with the joys when my grandfather went to war.after the war they got back together for good.my dad tells me my nan was related to the joys, but has no idea what the connection was.there are no living family members  that i know who can help.any help connecting the priddles to the joys would be greatly appreciated.my grandmother moved to faversham from the ashford area.many thanks.

The 1901 Census shows a Lionel Joy, photographer, born in 1880, living with his family in Ashford.

His brother Sydney was also a photographer.

So it seems that this fits with your Faversham photographer, who originally came from Ashfordl

Lionel MGL Joy
born c 1880 in Deal
living in West Ashford

Lionel has a number of siblings including Violet and Gladys, who could possibly have married a Mr Priddle, thus making your grandmother Irene a neice?

I will have a look through the marriages.  Do you have your grandmother's birth reference?  When was she born?

I don't think either Gladys or Violet Joy married a Priddle from my initial search, but the relationship could go back further.

Was your grandmother Irene this birth?

I think to get further you will need to let us know if you have details of either your grandmother's birth or your grandparents' marriage, and if so, what your grandmother's father's name is shown as.

The Joy family are fairly easily found on the censuses, and it may well be that there is a family connection somewhere - Lionel Joy's mother was Martha Hanger (I have found his parents' marriage) and perhaps one of her siblings was connected to either the Priddle family, or to your grandmother's mother.

Do you have further details of your grandmother, even rough date of birth would assist?

Well at least we have the birth reference pinned down, then, which is excellent!

I do think it would be worthwhile ordering this birth certificate from the GRO as this will confirm the father's and mother's name, and then we can go on for the Priddle/Apps marriage reference.

I can't see any appropriate Apps girls born in Dover in either the 1891 or 1901.  Why do you think her mother was born c 1885 in Dover, do you have other documentary evidence for this?  I only ask as family memories are often inaccurate.

There is an Apps/Priddle marriage in 1899, which should mean that the couple will show up in the 1901.

The children were actually Violet Annie and Doris Nellie Priddle.

Have to go out, back shortly.  Does this ring bells with the family?

One thing that does occur is that possibly your grandmother might have been the illegitimate child of either Violet or Doris, born so long after the marriage?  Possibly the father's surname could have been Alexander?

You do really need to see the certificate to check what it actually says.
