Grandad's medals stolen-how do I replace them?
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 17:00 GMT (UK) »
Back in 1991 my wife and I suffered a burglary at our home. Among the items stolen were my Grandfather's First World War medals.
They were reported to the police but never recovered.
I was gutted at the time but, to my shame, obviously not gutted enough to do anything about it.
Now, seventeen years on and retired, I have started researching my family and would like to have Grandad's medals replaced if that is possible.

Question: How do I go about it; I have his records from the Medal Roll on Ancestry, but who do I contact ?

Thanks, and here's hoping I can do it.

Hi David,

I'm afraid that replacing the medals with replacement named originals is unlikely to be possible.  The MOD website states that only post-WWII medals can be replaced and even then in limited circumstances.

You may have to consider purchasing modern replicas, although I'm not aware of the best method to go about this.

The link to the MOD site is:

Best wishes

Its sad they were never recovered but they may show up
Maybe contact Medal News there is a medal tracker service on the site.

You can buy erased WW1 Medals on ebay...some of the modern  copies available are shocking quality.

If you have to go for replacements, these people, in my experience, are very good:

Hi. Thanks for your replies. At least I now know what I can and can't do about the situation.
I checked the link you kindly supplied, Rockford, and that is indeed a dead-end. Sad that, I expect there are a fair few people who are in a similar position and not being assisted by the issuing authorities. Still, they probably think it's too long ago to bother too much.
I had a good search through the 'medaltracker' site Ady but to no avail. It was a long shot anyway as the little towrags who stole the medals made off through adjacent woodland and probably threw them when they realised what they were and were identifiable.
Thudders, I've checked out your link and the prices seem very reasonable. I do believe this is the road I will go down. They also have an engraving service which is handy.

Thanks once again people for your help.

Regards, David.
