George Jones Death 1874
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 20:07 GMT (UK) »
hi, my 3rd grt grandfather was george Jones born 1800/1801 abercorn monmouthshire. his wife hannah jones nee price died in 1873, george was the informant on the death cert. i have 2 certs for george and dont know which is the right one.
he was a mason.
one death cert says he was living at 5 twenty houses Dowlais Glamorgan, his occupation is given as smith, is this the same as mason or something different?
the informant was Howell Jones resident at same address. my george doesnt have a son Howell that i know of unless its his brother, in that case i dont know if its him or not.
the other cert says he lived at Merton or morton Bishopston, he is aged 72, died on 29th january 1874. his occupation is given as Quarryman, informant is phillip davies fisherman present at death.
i have checked freebmd and i think he died in 1874 but could be wrong, i cannot find him in 1881 census. he was living in 10+11 north morgan Street llandaff Canton glamorgan. is canton in cardiff? i want confirmation of which cert is most likely the right one or if anyone can point me to another more likely cert
regards

Hi John

The 1874 is the likeliest from his occupation

A smith worked with metal - not stone

thanks to both of you for replying,
i have since found that neither of the 1874 death certs are my ancestor. my ancestor george Jones died on 27th January 1878 at tredegar monmouth, but there is no record of it in the index on freebmd or findmypast. he was age 77.
