SIMMONS immigrants 1911 and 1920
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 17:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I think these might be the three brothers on my family tree who "went to Australia", and wonder if anyone can help me find more info about them:

08/12/1911 An Ernest Simmonds left from London for Sydney on board the "Omrah". He was single but there is no indication given about his occupation or his exact age but he was over 12.

27/12/1911 A Henry M Simmons left from London for Sydney on board the “Geelong”. He was single and a Farm Hand. There is no indication given of his exact age but he was over 12.

05/03/1920 A John Simmons left from London for Sydney on board the “Demosthenes”. He was aged 20, single and a Farm Labourer.

Thanks,

cassiar

Hello

There is a listing for  a Henry Matthew Simmons, b Edgemont Shropshire, abt 1893 enlisted at Lismore NSW in the AIF in WW1.  He gave his NOK as his father in Shropshire. His service record is availble to view for free

Hi Judith and Jenn,

Judith - thank you very much for finding Henry Matthew in the AIF!  This service record confirmed that the family was living in Hadnall at the time, and therefore they're the family I was searching for, and now I know a bit about what happened to at least one brother.

Jenn - thank you for replying as well...the parents were Matthew and Mary Ann Simmons.  Ernest Luke was born circa 1890, Henry Matthew approx. 1892 - they were both born in Edgmond, Shropshire (aka Salop).  John, I believe, is Arthur John born in about 1898 in Wrockwardine, Shropshire.  My father-in-law told me  that three boys from that family went to Australia.

I appreciate your help, and I look forward to any further info you find.

Hi Jenn,
This is great!  Thank you so much.
Is there regular census records (i.e. every 10 years or so) in Australia that can be accessed?

Hi Jenn,
Can you find a John Simmons or any other Simmons in NSW after 1920?  I'm not sure it would be John.  I think he was Arthur John b. 1898.  And he may have gone to some other place, but I'm thinking he would try to find his brothers?
Thanks.

Hello  there
Sorry  I  did  do  quite a bit of looking for Arthur John or just John Simmons  but  no  death  up  to 1977 showing  with  father and mother as given,  also  checked in Victoria up  to 1985.

there is this  death in NSW that is relevant

reg 43986/1969  surnameSIMMONS  FLORENCE JESSIE I  father  JOHN no mothers details given died  AGED 81 YRS  COFFS HARBOUR

this gives her a birth year of 1888c
