A battalion heading for Ypres
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 18:08 GMT (UK) »
This postcard is from our family archive, I believe it belonged to my grandfather's brother in law, John Gent who was from Chorley and served in the East Lancashire Regiment, a drummer, he recalled leading the battalion beating the sidedrum to keep the men in step.
The back of the card bares a message in faint pencil... "among these tough looking stooges there was a brother of mine I am sad to say" it was taken by Algernon Smith, 41 Regent Street, Wrexham.
Can anyone identify these young men? Were they heading to Ypres or returning?
Thanks for reading.

Ummmm....

You know what?

I reckon, even thought the Sgt only has a Boer War medal, that this is post war and the answer to the the question of whether they are heading to or from Ypres is ...neither!

The are I should say Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and this is a Passing Out photo, the platoon being named "Ypres" as trg platoons are named after battle honours gained by the Regt.

It could be the end of trg for a bunch of Territorials....

The manner in which the trousers are worn, the collar dogs in the lapels, the bulled boots, and the jackets all point to post war.

Oh and the fact that the jackets fit!
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

The Chorley Pals joined up for WW1 in the South Lancs Regiment maybe along with other from the surrounding towns and villages.

There is a book about the Chorley Palls

It is NOT a South Lancs badge!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Oh and I see what you mean...Silver War Badge, not South Wales Borderers!

Those jackets could well be 1922 ptn, but I can't see the darts! Would be a bit odd for the Sgt to have a Boer War gong but nothing else...Odd but not impossible

And I would put a LARGE amount of money on RWF...
