McIntosh's of Durness
« on: Saturday 13 December 08 05:47 GMT (UK) »
I am descendant of Hugh McIntosh, born Durness, Sutherland, Scotland (he states this on certificates) who came to Australia (year unknown) and married here in 1873 to Elizabeth Crowther. On all certificates his year of birth varies putting his birth anywhere between 1830 - 1849.  His parents names are not noted on neither his marriage or death certificates. Hugh signed his name of marriage cert. On the IGI I have found a Hugh christened 26 Jul 1830, Durness, parents John McIntosh and Mary Mackenzie. Hugh named first daughter Mary, first son John. How can I confirm that this is "my Hugh"? Is there shipping records which would show him leaving Scotland for Australia?
Any advice appreciated
thanks - Cheryl

I checked what other children John and Mary had and found another 2

Isabell McIntosh  may 1825  Durness
Hugh McIntosh            1830  Durness   you have this
Mary  McIntosh    05/01/1833  Durness

does the other 2 names match any of Hughs children

Yes I have come across these on the IGI as well as on the censuses & burial records I have details but it is only this stage "presumption" that this is "my" Hugh. I do  not know any of Hugh's background other than what he declared on records here in Australia - which is very little. Is there anyway I can follow the "Hugh" over there as to leaving?
Thanks
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
  Welcome to RootsChat.

Which state of Australia did Hugh marry in?
On the marriage certificate does is state how long Hugh had been in Australia ?
Who are the witnesses' on the certificate. Are they relatives of the couple?
This may be of help in finding where Hugh landed in Australia
 Regards
Mariac
