Hi Jean

Have you a list of his children and their birth years(including any who may not be on the 1901?) - plus his wife details

Cheers

Hi Ambly.
His wife was Jane ages 42,children David 13,Hugh 11,Jane 3,Janet 5,John 7, William 16. Unable to find any of them before 1901 census.
This is a long shot to find my grandmother Ellen Jane McClelland! All I know her father was called David but he had died by 1918 when she married in Selling Kent.I have her marriage certificate but it gives her age as 28!Could it be a miss print and Jane was 13 in 1901?
I was told she came from near Belfast but unable to find her there!
But I was told I was named after an aunt on my grandmother's side from Scotland!
        Thanks Jean.

Hi Jean,

I presume you have tried variants of the surname such as McClellan, McLelland, McLellan etc. Don't forget Mac Clelland!

Hi Hugo.
I was going on the spelling from my grandmother's marriage certificate,1918 Selling Kent.

I have now found two Ellen McClellands on the 1911 census for Ireland(Belfast area) But not living at home so no real help!Need the 1901 census!

Greetings Jean,

My wife was a McLelland.  Her ancestors include McLellan, McClelland, and Mac Lelland.  It depends on where you look and what you are looking at.

Do not expect consistency of surname spelling in Ayrshire records!

It is worth trying Soundex and variants.

Hugo

Thanks Hugo I will. But when the 1901 census for Ireland is on line I can sort out if she was born in Ireland as I was told.

Hi.
Sorry don't know. Its my grandmother Ellen Jane McClelland I am looking for.I always thought she was born in Co Down Ireland c 1890 but unable to find her birth. All I have to go on is her marriage certificate, she married 1918 Kent England,it gave her father as a David.
But I think her family may have first came from Scotland.
