Village Carriers

Several of my father's ancestors on both sides were shown as village carriers or carters. Would they be classed as travellers. So far as I know they had adresses they used as a base.

I have a relative who was a carter/carrier and he can be found in the local directory as making regular runs to Worcester every Wednesday and Saturday. I would suggest they were self employed delivery men fetching and carrying for the locals.

Maybe a local trade directory will list yours.

Thanks for that MJB. Though I shall certainly pursue that with the early 20th century one, name Stim(p)son Wisbech Cambs 1900-1910 approx; I don,t expect much success with the other one, Wiltshire 1562 approx. Unless someone knows otherwise.
