Henry Gander - Hobart
« on: Thursday 18 December 08 21:14 GMT (UK) »
Help!

A gx3 uncle, Henry Gander, (born 12 June 1813 in London, England), was "transported for life" to Hobart, 3 January 1834, (at Quarter Sessions in Lewes, Sussex). On 5 April, 1854, he married Sarah Smart in Hobart. I can not seem to find any further info on him, nor any offspring. I don't know if he stayed in Tasmania/Australia or came back to England. Nothing, nada, zip!

Any help with info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Hi Mike,

The date for the marriage for Henry Gander and Sarah Smart is 5th April 1854 Hobart.

RDG 37  reg no. 198/1854.

No children and no deaths in Tasmania for Henry or Sarah.
Must have moved from Tasmania.

Thank you, all, for the replies to this. I have spent the last couple of days shovelling white stuff but managed to get back here, briefly.

I am curious. Are the "Tickets for leave" a pardon? I wonder if they moved to the mainland. Does Australia have census records from 1861?

Thanks all and Merry Christmas to all.

Dear Mike,
We have had some interesting news stories on the amount of snow that is being dumped on America.....I presume it is the same for Canada?
I have checked the NSW Births, deaths and marriages, but the Henrys and Sarah that are listed in the deaths don't match your Henry and Sarah. There are no children listed for a Henry/Sarah Gander either.

They could have gone to Victoria.....the BDM is online, but costs for searches, so perhaps one of the Rootschatters who has the microfiche could look it up for you.....ditto the census.
As Sarah was close to 40 when they married, maybe they had no children.
The other possibility is that they died in Tasmania after 1899, and there are Rootschatters who have access to the Tasmanian federation Index.
Cheers
Susie (it is a glorious sunshining day here on the East Coast of Australia) ;D
