Hi there

Ethel Mary Cox was probably married between 1916 and 1919 and somewhere in Bedfordshire.  The birth of one of her children, William was registered in Newport Pagnell!

Regards

sirena - welcome to RootsChat.

As you've found the registration of a child from this marriage, can we have her husband's surname to ensure we're looking for the right marriage, please?

Her husbands' surname was Burgess.

Christian name could be Robert George, William George, or something containing George.

Well in freebmd there's an Ethel M Cox marriage June 1919, Luton 3b 1155.  This reference number is in the official index.  She is cross referenced married to Norton.
Looks the groom is Arthur E Norton marriage to Cox, June 1919, Luton 3b 1156.

And that is the only one coming up.

I've checked the images on FreeBMD for the whole of 1920 & the first two quarters of 1921 (birth mentioned registered June 1921) & drawn a blank - several Ethel M Cox marriages but none to Burgess. A standard seacrh on FreeBMD didn't produce a match, but checking on the coverage pages 1920 & 1921 are much lower than some earlier & later years.

sirena - from what you've posted I'm assuming that you haven't got the birth certificate you mention - depending on what other evidence you have could this be a child of another Cox/Burgess marriage?  You can check the images on FreeBMD - from the home page select "images" and follow through - this is the only way to check completely as not all of the index pages have been transcribed into the searchable area.

Further thoughts - could Ethel have been a widow? Given the time - just after WW1 & "Spanish" flu it isn't improbable. If she had been married before normal practice would be to record the second marriage under her married (ie not maiden) name; but children of that marriage would show the maiden name on the index. In theory if she had been married before then both married names should be shown on children's birth certificates as well as her maiden name (as long as the registrar was given the information).
A general search on FreeBMD of a marriage for surname Burgess to spouse Ethel doesn't turn anything up for Bedfordshire, but as previous message the coverage on FreeBMD is patchy over this period, so it would mean viewing the full images & without a definite name for Burgess that's long & tedious.

It may be best to get the birth certificate & at least get the father's full name & perhaps any more detail on Ethel.
