Carlisle or Carlyle in Lachine, Montreal
« on: Sunday 21 December 08 21:30 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am really new to RootsChat, though have done quite a bit of research on my family in the UK.

I am stuck on details of my G Grandfather.  His name was Christopher Carlisle , or sometimes written as Carlyle. He was born in Ireland but we have no idea where or who his parents were
He met & married my G Grandmother, Theresa Napper, on 9th April; 1892 in Lachine, Montreal.
I have most of a very fragile hand-written copy of an extract from - 'the Registration book of St (Stephens - I think) Church, Lachine April 12 1892'  I wondered if parish records might have more details.
My grandmother Lilian's, baptism was registered at the same church Nov 11, 1893

They also had a son, George, but all came back to the UK before 1900. Family knowledge is vague.  Apparently he lied about his age to join the army because he wanted to leave home, and did not talk about his family nor had contact with them.

There is so much more, such as the ship my g Grandmother travelled on to Canada & why they came back, but any information from Lachine would be a great start

Hello HJay, and welcome to Rootschat!

I will have a look in a minute to see what I can find, but I would hazard a guess that what you have is what you get :D Parish records in Quebec were entirely freestyle, and there was no civil registration until 1989 or so. What was written, always by hand, in the records was entirely a matter of the whim of the parish minister or priest or whatever, although the Catholic records were more regulated as to what information went in. So your fragile paper may be the sum total of it...

Hang on a few minutes.

Cheers,
China

There is a Christopher Carlisle in the Canadian passenger lists, a single male aged 28 of Irish nationality, arriving at Quebec/Montreal in July of 1887. Unfortunately he seems to be travelling alone :P He is described as a farm labourer. The ship's name is the SS Montreal, departing Belfast and Liverpool.

What service!!
Sounds promising. He will have been alone at that point, because they met in Canada - aged 25 is about right
We have an old photo which shows him with a labouring gang, probably on the railroad or similar, probably paid more than farming

Can't seem to find him in the 1891 census...tried all the tricks, but he's hiding. Did he use any other name?

There's a huge railway yard just north of Lachine, and both CN and CP lines go through it, and there's also the Lachine canal, very famous...don't know offhand when any of them were built but there should be plenty of info on the net especially about the Canal.

I pressed the button to open the locks at the Lachine Canal once, what a privilege ;D

Got to go out for a little while now...
