Emma Saunders/Heath/Paiki/Turner - burial place
« on: Wednesday 24 December 08 07:03 GMT (UK) »
Am trying to locate the burial place of Emma: nee Saunders. She married Thomas Heath, then Paiki and Tom Turner.  She lived up Waimate/Morven/Timaru way and died about 1930.  There is a lady buried at Timaru who died in 1930 but this is not her.  Can anyone help.

Cheers

Margaret

Hello Margaret,

Have not found a death or burial but wondered if you had these.

Emma Saunders m 1871 to Thomas Heath Folio 1697

Emma S Heath m 1874 to Thomas Taylor Folio 2133 (this probably not yours)

Emma Pyke m 1903 to Thomas Turner Folio 2883

These references from the NZSOG CDRom

I wonder if Paiki and Pyke are the same name - depending  on whether you are speaking Maori or English?

But can not find a Heath marrying a Pyke/Paiki

Hi Lu

I'm not sure - I haven't investigated that yet.  I should say that Emma was a Maori lady born in Hampden and may have returned there upon her death - I'm not sure.

Thanks Margaret

Emma Saunder Loder - may be buried in the Waihao Maori Cemetery or in Timaru - I have heard both localities as her burial place. I think it is highly likely that she is however buried at Waihao.
Her first marriage was to Tom Heath, second to Hemi Paiki and third to Thomas Turner.
She did NOT go to Hampden on her death and she was half Maori - her father was James Saunders Loder known as Jimmy the Needle
Yes she could have been known as Emma Pyke and she was known by other names as well, Ema and Hema amongst others I believe
I may have been standing within yards of her grave this very day depending on where she is buried...if she is buried where I was then there is no headstone but there are no headstones for most buried there.

Hi

Since posting this request I have obtained Emma's death certificate - she is buried in the Waihoa Cemetery.  Can I ask who you are?  Are you related to Emma?
Cheers Margaret

Yes I am related to her and I was standing in Waihao cemetery yesterday...and last weekend and the weekend before! Her photo is on the wall beside me even now as I type.

I have not got the time to list all details about her or more specifically JSL and only joined this forum to answer any specific questions that people may ask and strongly suspect that you will have more knowledge of her than I do if you live in Waimate district.

If you are related to her then there is a thread on JSL on this site as well.

Hi

I don't live in Waimate - I'm a Southlander, however I have seen the photo's at the Marae.  My grandmother is standing beside Emma.  Can I ask who you are.  I am willing to share the information I have if you are interested.

Cheers Margaret
